The average American woman spends thousands of dollars each year on beauty and salon treatments.

That's about 160 hours of grooming and primping. Phoebe Baker Hyde decided to explore what would happen if she gave up makeup for an entire year.

"I did what a man would do. Put on deodorant. Put on a little gel and head out the door. Maybe I can approximate that. The makeup would go, the jewelry would go," Baker Hyde, the author of the new book, "The Beauty Experiment," told Katie Couric on her ABC talk show "Katie."

The result? Baker Hyde said she felt more beautiful than ever without all the makeup.

While she found the experiment a success, experts say society may be less open to the idea.

Watch Katie 3 p.m. ET Friday on ABC to hear more from Hyde about her experiment.

"Studies indicate that we do tend to see attractive people, conventionally attractive people, we see them as happier, we see them as warmer, in fact, a few studies have shown that they even get lower prison sentences or don't get convicted at all," Caroline Heldman, professor at Occidental College who specializes in gender studies, said.

Couric's show decided to do its own social experiment to see what would happen. "Katie" sent out a camera crew with Maureen, who was all dolled up and in need of help on the streets of New York.

People stopped to help her, and they even offered to take her where she needed to go.

But when Maureen dressed down, put on glasses and left off her makeup, the results were quite different. Hardly anyone stopped to help her, and those who did had reservations.

"I was definitely surprised because I don't normally wear makeup when I go out, and I don't really look at the reactions that people are giving me. And when I did this experiment I really saw how differently I was treated because of how I looked," she

Hyde also stopped shaving her legs during her makeup-less year.

Interesting experiment. I can't imagine going a year without shaving my legs lol. I've got to shave my legs and armpits. As for makeups, I'm not big on it. I almost never wear any make ups except for lip gloss. I can't stand the feeling of having the foundation on my face. Every now and then, I would put on an eyeliner and mascara for special occassions.

No before and after pictures?

I've gone make-up less for probably 20+ years, and before that I didn't wear make-up all the time. The rare occasion that I dress up, I put on some blush, eye shadow & lipstick.

During the cold months, I have to shave my legs once in a while. Otherwise it hurts when I pull on my knee-high socks. :o

Big deal! I have not used makeup in 15 years. I can't stand the feel of it on my face and who know what the Hell is in makeup today, I bet most of it is coming from China. My older sister thought she was getting cancer on her lips from wearing red lipstick for years .

I do wear make up and they are very lightly. I dont wear make up on sunday most of time. sometimes i dont wear make up at work. it depends on my mood.

If someone wants to pay me for 1 thousand dollars for no make up for a year. I am IN!.

The older I became, the less make-up for me...and now it's almost nil, except for lip-gloss....Really cannot stand seeing some women with make-up an inch thick on their faces....and my sister will absolutely not leave her house unless she has eye make-up on.....:giggle:..She also used the Preparation H for under eye wrinkles.......my other sisters uses Oil of Olay...but no make-up except for lip gloss....

I must be the only AD female member who is not a natural beauty. :(

I wear very little make-up but I probably should use more. Most of my "prep" time is used for fighting the effects of too many years of sun exposure, and basic old age. Shower, shampoo, condition, blow dry, moisturize, dental hygiene, file nails (no polish), plucking and shaving, eye drops, getting dressed, a little eyeliner and tinted lip gloss takes at least one hour.

Never said I was a natural beauty. Just don't see/feel the need for makeup - plus I'm lazy when it comes to stuff like that. I'm lucky that my hair can be worn "wash and wear" at different lengths.

The best I ever told my girlfriend. Less makeup, she look much beautiful than have too much makeup. Plus, save few bucks. I would said, probably 30% to 50%.

I read an editorial once that before a certain time, women with hairy legs were popular and sexy/attractive especially in European societies. This was all before our current supermodel/hairless women era.

As I understand it, under arm hair on women is or was pretty well accepted, but I've never heard that to be true about legs or face.

A dated a girl that tried to go a year without make-up. I'm not sure if she made it.

Must be a slow day at the newsrooms for this to even make headlines.

eeewwwww to the last part, no shaving her legs either???? I've gotten up in the middle of the night before and shaved my legs because the feeling of the hair on my legs against the sheets was driving me nuts, and it wasn't even long. The last few months though I've been waxing them, and it isn't as prickly and annoying when it grows back now.

The 2 things you can do to make your face look more attractive is 1) tweeze your eyebrows, no not to nothing just get them under control give them a nice clean look. 2) wear mascara, mascara is seriously the most essential makeup, even if all you wear is mascara and no other make up it will make a big difference.

Me I don't wear base/foundation, I don't even own any. I use a bronzer on my cheeks and eyelids instead of blush and eye shadow, powder, mascara and lip gloss/stick. If I'm going out I may bust out some eyeliner, maybe.

No pictures? I'm curious to see if her complexion actually improved from not wearing makeup for a long time.

I knew a girl at RIT who wore makeup heavily on a daily basis. She even sleeps with her makeup. One day, she came into the kitchen (on the dorm floor) to microwave some chicken noodle soup. No one recognized her. I barely did since she was a resident on my floor and I saw her all the time. Apparently, she was sick and stopped wearing makeup for a week until she got better.

I think that the more often you wear makeup, the more you lose your natural beauty. :(
