Hi, I'm Jason.
I've been in the field of Deaf education for quite a while now; upon college graduation I received, along with my degree, a certificate in ASL and Deaf culture. Starting in January of 2008 I began to work in a special-needs/deaf/hoh school here in Pittsburgh - I still work at this school; I am the Mental Health Specialist for the elementary grades.
This makes for a total of 3 years of ASL classes (including culture, sociolinguistics, grammar, structures, foreign sign languages etc.) and 5 years working full time for our local deaf school. And while we do use T/C and often, as a result, slip in an out of SEE, PSE and ASL - I am familiar with the structures of all and can code switch accordingly.
So - why am I here on this forum?
I thought that it was time for a change in my life and so I have decided to take the NIC exam; my first test is scheduled for February 1st (fingers and toes crossed!) and while I sit in my local coffee shop every Saturday and Sunday studying extensively for this test... Well, guess where I often find myself discovering the most thorough answers on the internet?
Here, that's right.
So - firstly I would like to thank everyone here, many of your discussions are just wonderfully helpful for me and have been for a about a month now.
I wanted to stop lurking and, instead, introduce myself and maybe have the chance to engage in some conversations here.
I'm also looking for any Skype-Buddies who would be willing to discuss some NIC/RID test study tips. Or Skype-Buddies who are, themselves, studying for the test and need someone to study with. If this is an easy option come and send me a message on Skype - my handle is "jmkirin"
Either way, I should be around on this board for a while now. Thanks again!
