tthe closest deaf anything near me is the school i want to teach at when i am done with college, it is two hours away and i dont drive yet.. :(

You need to meet some deaf adults.

I don't know anything about this church, so I'm not making that recommendation but it does show that there are some deaf adults in your community:

Where is your college? It's hard to imagine your college would have ITP and Deaf Ed programs without having some kind of deaf community near-by. How would they expect you to do the practicum and internship work?

That's a fact! The real fun is spelling proper names of people and places, and knowing acronyms.

My uni 'terps loved me because i put together an extensive vocabulary list (wth definitions & sign info) the first week into each class, along with a list of websites for the vocab (and sign preferance).

Because seminary has a lot of technical terms from Greek, Latin, Hebrew etc that would otherwise have to be fingerspelled constantly, we also set up a number of 'inclass signs' (following ASL rules) to replace common terms that lacked specific & unique signs.

Lots of work - but made everyone's life sooooo much easier :)


It also helped that for those classes my preferred form of communication was for my 'terp team to handle interpreting the Prof & Classes voices for me, but I voiced for myself (most of the time, unless I could explain something better in ASL)

You've said you don't know any Hoh/d/Deaf people, there's not place to learn in your area etc .... I'm curious how did you get interested in ASL and why do you want to be a 'terp?

Also how much do you know about the actual training required for ASL/English Terps as well as what their job is like on a daily basis etc.?


Also - those who've commented on your spelling are being 100% serious - if you want to be involved in the Deaf community causally or as some kind of teacher or terp you really are going to have to work on your spelling. If your spelling and grammar mistakes are because you're used to texting or as rushing typing, you need to slow down and type correctly - mistakes in spelling are more confusing (in general) to Hoh/d/Deaf, especially ASLers than for Hearing because most of us do not read phonetically ("sounding out words").

If you are struggling with English in school - specifically Spelling, Grammar, Sentence structure and aspects of language ( ie verbs, nouns, pronouns, prepositions, idioms, etc) make sure you take some extra classes, get tutors etc so that you're getting "A"s (+90% ) in that course. It's very important.

various communities operate in different ways and part of working in a specific community is being open to learning about that and not pushing oneself into the community simply because it's what YOU want.
Consider what is your real goal......
 
thanks so much reba! and the college i want to attend is in saint aug. its roght down the road from fsdb so they are both two hours awqy, theres also jacksonville wich is three jours amd tampa wich is two lol im stuck in the middle.
 
also anij i met a deaf girl amd learned some signing for her, them she moved away... and i was sad. also yes i know my spelling is not good, thats because i domt always pay close attention to it when i know it is not really needed. im dislexic so i have to consentrate really hard on spelling

You aren't attending college now? When do you start?

You need to understand, "here" and in the Deaf Community proper spelling is "needed" and is VERY important - so make sure that you take the time to at the very least bother to run spell check before posting - we all make occasional mistakes, however there are 5 spelling errors in just the section I quoted!

Also if you have a lot of trouble reading, writing and spelling - I'm going to be honest, interpreting and teaching isn't going to be something you'll be able to do (you have to pass a LOT of testing and then if you did manage to graduate you still have to be 'spot on' or you'll not get hired. I'd never hire a terp who emailed me something with as many mistakes as are in your posts ... especially if they also said "they only bother being careful with spelling when it's important"... By which you have in effect said that it's not "important enough" for you to bother being careful when communicating with Hoh/d/Deaf people.

If this is something you really want to do, you really need to get the appropriate assistance to get a handle on proper spelling at the very least - there are a number of tutors and DS providers that have specific programs to help those who are dyslexic etc. This needs to be your #1 priority. Honest.

Good point. Most of my interpreting assignments are set up by email or text message. Some of my first contacts with my clients and consumers are by text or email.

Ok, but why do you want to be an interpreter or a TOD ?

This is a question that you'll be asked thousands of times, as it's actually quite important.


Also, you haven't said how you are "teaching yourself" - that wasn't a rethorical question, we can only help if we know what you're using as a reference.
