Why Is Polygamy So Controversial?

Well, under the old school of thought, nature is ruthless, red with teeth and claws. One can see why the religious have had issues with this. However the religious right are right about Darwin, he did struggle with being an atheist and kinship with apes during the latter half of his life in his letters. But to write such ideas in the Origins of Species was suicidal during Victorian time. So he left it open for interpretation by the scientific community.

However what Dawkins did was find examples where nature isn't as cold and bleak as early evolutionists wrote about, which was a huge contending issue for creationists. He wrote about altruism, mutualism, kinship, symbiotic relationships and the promises it hold for our future. It's sort of a democratic socialist take on Darwinism actually.

Agreed. Even Darwin revised his ideas. Yes, it was suicidal in Victorian times. I have a copy of Origin of Species on my bookshelf, and each time I refer to it it amazes me how revolutionary his thinking was, and how self destructive his decision to publish.

Surely, you are not referring to Descent of Man? ;)

But to answer Doug5's answer on the topic of polygny.

It depends on the context.

One could argue because humans are naturally jealous and they are easily emotionally heart-broken when a loved one cheat; or how someone may feel left out if excluded from an extensive relationship, then there an innate reason for feeling that way, thus presenting the case for monogamy.

However, on the other hand, people tend to go off the beaten track when they don't feel like they are getting the attention they need and seek the affections of others; in which, some may argue for polygny is natural.

The answer is usually in the between. People are searching for kinship. They want to feel needed. They know this because when shit hits the fan, no one else has their back except the people they have close relations with. It's in our genetic code to participate in a tit-for-tat game.

I got my bible and my bucket o' popcorn.

When I lived in Berkley Ca. a woman I knew invited me to group she went to. I when along out curiosity. The group was run by a guy , I can't remember what he called himself, anyway he told everyone to stand in a circle back to back and rub their asses together! I am thinking WTF!! The guy running the group was watching the people do this , I DID NOT get in the circle and the guy told the rest of the group that I was 'not normal' as I did not want rub my ass with them! Curiosity killed the cat, but in this case the cat got sick! I could not believe how much control the guy had over the people. He was trying to start a cult and was trying to weed out people he could control. I was not asked to come back! He could not get me to do anything! I wonder if the women that get involved in polygamy are being controlled or there on their on free will . It is amazing how one person can control so many people.

The cult leader brainwashes the cultists to worship him like Jim Jones and David Koresh who told them that they are God or Jesus Christ or whatever. I feel sorry for those weak people. I believe that women in polygamy got brainwashed to believe that their cult leader was telling the truth. As for Muslim polygamy, it is a part of their religion.

What makes you think that only "weak" people are brainwashed?

People who are brainwashed are weak-minded. People who are not brainwashed are strong-minded. Doesn't that make sense to you?

I'm curious: are you, or have you ever been brainwashed over any aspect or subject in your life?

I obviously did not pay attention to philosophy in college... But I think polygamy is more of an ethical debate than a philosophical debate. I know my philosophy credentials are lacking, but I am not aware of any of our great philosophical thinkers putting their 2 cents in to clarify the ethical debates of polygamy. Religious texts are really the ethical guide posts in all societies.

No, it doesn't make sense because it is completely and utterly false.

It is a moral debate in Westernized cultures. In other cultures, it is more of a sociological and cultural survival debate.
