flash ROMs on consumer electronics?

Wow, 55 views and not a reply. I think lot of people took peek of this thread from outsiders of the forum. Lot of people from XDA developers or similar sites do lot of ROM cooking and ROM flashing. I do that in occassions.

I did once on Sprint HTC Touch Pro to gain access to Windows Mobile 6.5 which Sprint don't approve the official rom upgrade. I also did it with Blackberry smartphone before HTC phone. First was bricked, but lucky to get replacement and managed get it upgraded with compatible version from Vezion.

Now my 2 years contact with Sprint is almost over, so I can get Android phone when I renew my contact. I'm getting Samsung Epic G4.

Did you know that there is a way to unbrick your Blackberry if you could find a way. Some people did resistor hacks on the USB port to unbrick it and get it working again. There's variety of ways to do that.

I'm not a pro in ROM flashing and it is risky, for sure. I did flash my old Samsung Epix with custom Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM and now it's on a custom Windows 6.1 ROM at the moment. I'm planning to flash it to an offical Windows Mobile 6.5 which was released last year. I currently have Samsung Captivate but there is no offical Android 2.2 ROM, yet. There are plenty of customized unoffical ROMs for it, though. I'm scared to brick it and have to do a jig (resistor hack). I am not sure if my phone insurance covers that, but I know for sure warranty will not cover it.

Also, I have flashed my cheap wifi router a few times. I even tried that with my 32" HDTV which I used to have but it didn't work so I gave up, lol.

I will be honest you are speaking a foreign language as far as I am concerned :giggle:

Yeah....that's techno-babble to lot of people...even to me. There are stuff lot more complicated than I can figure it out with that stuff.

I've flashed a few stuff, such as my PC, Media Player, DVD player/burner, Phone, TV, etc. Most ROMS that I have flashed are legal, but a few are 3rd party/hacks.

I usually flash ROMS as a last resort or if I know I have nothing to lose. I try to abide by the saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Having the latest version does not necessary imply that it is better, etc. :)

So far two people know what you are talking about. From what I gather, that means the rest of us are honest. :D

Of course, flashing them doesnt always make it b etter than the last version. You know, sometimes I like to twiddle with them.

I believe newer dvd players can do the rom flashing? I rarely see usb ports on it.

Botti, yea I know but I do not always understand what others talk about in other threads...its all blah blah to me.

I am not sure about the newer dvd players. My friend's Panasonic DVD player searches for updates "over the air".

I also have an old, cheapo DVD player that could be updated by connecting the DVD player to the PC. I have never tried it though, because it is too much hassles.

Me too! I usually just stay out of them, but your thread just struck me funny as it seemed no one understood it!

I only understood the part about unbricking a blackberry. I have done that a few times to resell them for extra money. All the rest is pure techno babble. I may as well post my knitting graph in response. lol

I've flashed my HTC Mogul, Touch Pro, q9c, and a couple other of my friends devices. I updated my DVD's firmware using a usb connection and my iPhone 4 is jailbroke and unlocked and blah blah all that techno hype.

You haven't mentioned which BB you have and how it's bricked.

Ah, that figures. I saw our digital cable box with some kind of rs 232 port, probably for that method, of course not gonna bother with it. Or is it a vga port to connect to a monitor? I didnt really pay attention.

Haha, LOL! Not bad. You are able to unbrick it. At least it didnt end up as a paperweight.

Cool! HTC devices are well known for rom hacks and flashing. I see it all over the place. :)

The classic video game ROMs releases are out of control today. You can play it literatly on almost any fast Android or a rooted (jailbroken) iPhone. I could play super mario bros 3 on my phone, for example.
