Not sure if this is an appriorate topic in General chat.

When you and your hearing impaired friend or a relative are chatting in ASL and your hearing relative or hearing friend turns the living room's lights off while they are watching TV. It's too dark to see one another signing in ASL. Deaf people do require lights on for making important conversation in ASL, right?? If so, how do you feel when hearing person turns the light off as she/he demands you deaf people to turn it off while you guys are talking in ASL?

I suspect it must be one of those problems regarding.....AUDISM!!!! Right, isn't it??

If I have deaf friends at my house visiting, I don't turn on the TV.

Is it possible for those who want to chat, and those who want to watch TV do so in two different rooms?

It's plain rude to turn off lights without permission, whether people are hearing or deaf.

More likely a product of still living in your parent's house. No one would dare turn the lights off on me in my own home.

Sounds like a dorm, a hostel or bacholar apartments with shared areas to me.

simple - you wanna talk? go to other room. This applies for hearing people. Hearing people do not like it when other hearing people talk because it is distracting.

That's why I don't have any sympathy. In a hearing dorm, I learned quickly that if a few people want to watch a movie in a communal living room, that OTHER hearing people who are interested in talking leave the room; if you do have a full-blown conversation in middle of a movie, people get grumpy.

I think maybe he meant talking about points in/during the movie....

I wouldn't be so quick to pull the audism card just yet. Don't know enough of your situation. Maybe they are just ignorant.

The only time the lights are turned off at my house is when we want to watch a "scary" movie....I've known some deafies that like their home "dark", and use a 30 watt light bulb (for lamps, etc.)....closing the blinds/drapes, etc.....I can't deal with that! I'm a sunshine person! Even this AM when I got up at 6, open the blinds, getting ready for the day.....I want to know "what's going on outside", and feel "trapped" and "shut in" if I can't get some light into the house.

If ur outnumbered where ya live by hearies and they wanna watch TV in the dark....so what? Watching TV and talking are 2 different stories, and commercial breaks are usually for snacks, drinks, etc. It's not "audism"!...Same thing for watching TV with cc....lots of hearies hate it, but compromise with deafies about that. I'm the only deafie in my house, and there are certain programs on TV that I watch, with cc....as for the other programs the boys watch, they can cut the cc off if they want to. No problem!

I always speak up and tell whoever turned the lights off that I need it and most of the time, they apologize and say that they werent thinking.

I would speak up telling them that they need to use their brain why i rely the light in order to chat.

This is exactly what happens with me and my closest hearing friends even.
It just doesn't occur to them naturally, so just calm down and give a light reminder.

Oh please...

Is it possible for us deafies to talk in ASL in the dining room and/or kitchen room with the lights on, which both are right across from the living room (within no doors or a curtain, nothing between 3 rooms) and she's (hearing) still demanding us to turn the lights off in dining room and also kitchen room while she's watching TV? Come on.

ah so now we got a better picture. a woman watching tv is demanding you deafies in OTHER room to turn off the light? sounds like an old grumpy fart.

what about... close the door?

Probably one of those people that accuse you of playing loud music even though you're not home... let alone got the stereo on.

Uh, I don't live with my parents.
While I was growing up/living with my hearing parents, they had no probem with lights being turned on during the TV. They have a damn common sense with lights on when they want to chat with me in sign language. They usually require the lights on during watching the tube with their hearing companies or other family.

Damn right. By the way, this is she. Plus, there is VP (with smaller lcd flat screen TV) right next to cable TV. It's only one Cable TV (in the living room) in the entire house we live in. It did sometimes happened when she demanded us to turn the lights off while we were on VP with other friends. It infuriated us enough.
