I find it an insult when they say they want to cure deafness. What, they not happy with deaf people for just the way they are? To me, it's like finding a cure for dark pigment so everyone will be white.

I emotionally understand what you are saying but look at it from their point of view. Their endeavors are from an altruistic point of view. It is their goal in life to help humanity, again, from their point of view and they shouldn't be faulted for that. At least we have choices to take advantage of that innovation or not......

To me, it is like funding on research on how to make gay- straight using medical research (not the psychological research)

They want to find a cure because many deaf ppeople would like to hear. Some would like to be able to go to concerts, listen to the car radio, talk on the telephone. A cure would be for them.

that kind of reasoning only applies to scenario where it's forcibly used on people by some fascist government (and fascist parents). Thankfully..... it's not the case in here. I pray that it's same for other countries but...... it's really not my problem because I don't live there.

I don't think you realize how many people feel that deafness is a serious problem. Throughout the history and right now. This is not a cosmetics issue for them. And because of this, they make it hard on us to survive.

I agree that government funding should be reserved for life-threatening conditions and other conditions that are much more debilitating. There are already a number of "save this deaf child from the evil that is silence" type foundations like DRF and WHO.

The companies want to make $$$ off people who seek a cure. They don't have our best interests at heart. That's how medicine works in America.

but that's how they make cure, antibiotic, vaccine, etc. though... It's a very expensive research.

HUH?? Fascism is a political ideology. What does that have to do with parenting.

Urban Dictionary: fascist

2. A lesser authority (corporation, mayor, cop, boss, parent) who legally issues harsh, burdensome, micro-managing, insensitive, or uncaring orders -- especially when they know, or should know, that their goals can be accomplished with more autonomy and much less hardship or distress.

Not just medicine, but many other industries as well. The 3000 mile oil change is propaganda by petroleum industry.

well they didn't force you to get an oil change. it's up to you to wreck your own car or not :)

oh btw - german car's routine oil change is usually doubled the American/Japanese mileage.. about every 7,000+ miles :cool2:

They have to say 3000 just so lazy procrastinators will do it by 5000.

It's like when I would tell my daughter Santa was coming at 10:30 even though everyone knows Santa doesn't get there till 11:30. But it takes a while to get an excited kid to sleep. And if she did fall asleep early there was time for a quickie with the wife before building all the Barbie $^&%

Voted "I don't know" because, while I support a cure for deafness to those that want it, I can see the ones that choose to remain deaf being forced to confront the issue of accepting a cure they may not want. Peer pressure, anyone?

I totally agree.

That's not uncommon for American or Japanese cars to recommend the same in their owner's manual.

Not so sure. I think many take pride in their work. Even if they are just in it for the $$$$ I have no problem with that. No $$$ until they cure something and get it approved so whatever motivates them is fine by me. I am saying this about all cures.
