Here's the daily count data from NCDC the huge number of record snow or snow amount that tied the previous record:

Dec 20th 124

Dec 21st 50
U.S. Daily Snowfall Records set on December 21, 2009

Dec 22nd 75
U.S. Daily Snowfall Records set on December 22, 2009

Dec 23rd 71
U.S. Daily Snowfall Records set on December 23, 2009

Dec 24th 170

Dec 25th 235

Dec 26th 152

Total 877 (CONUS and Alaska)

Also, a total of 1692 record snow (best and tied) for the 2 weeks in December. And we also had 403 lowest max temperature records (i.e. record cold) set from Dec 6 to 14.

I can explain this:

"This year’s summer weather — cooler and wetter than average — has many scratching their heads and asking “what’s the deal?”

"So what’s behind this unseasonable summer weather?

According to the pros, warming ocean waters have translated into a cooler than normal summer for the northern Great Plains, Upper Midwest and eastern U.S. — as well as record-breaking drought and heat in the southwestern U.S. and the Pacific Northwest region.

Art Douglas, a climatologist who heads the atmospheric sciences department at Creighton University in Omaha, says that an El Niño that began building in late spring can be associated with this year’s wacky weather as jet stream patterns around the world are affected by this phenomenon. El Niño is the periodic warming of tropical Pacific waters that occurs on average every two to five years and typically lasts about 12 months."

"In early July, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists announced the arrival of 2009’s El Niño and expect it will continue developing during the next several months — with further strengthening possible — and lasting through winter 2009-10.

Douglas notes that El Niños are often associated with early snowstorms and increased winter precipitation across the plains. As a bonus, this year’s El Niño may help to possibly reverse drought conditions that have been deepening across Texas and California."

Warming ocean temps lead to cooler than normal summer for Midwest

In other words, they are EXPECTING the cooling phase to last til 2010. And their prediction is pretty on target. Nothing unusual or unexpected.

But they certainly did not expect record breaking snow in so many states.

Secondly, there is no reversing of a drought condition, especially severe ones that lasted over a period of several years or so, for it recover in a year or two. It would require several years or more of above normal precipitation to help recharge the groundwater system or aquifers which help maintain rivers, streams, and lakes at normal flows or capacity level. It's the groundwater that gets depleted and takes the longest to recover.

Even Germany's record cold and snow on the other side of the globe.
Record snowfall and killer cold create challenges for Germany's Christmas markets

Funny, that is generally true but you surely realize that it does take time to fully assess the whole situation yet you already jumped to a conclusion that since this year is relatively the coldest, the global warming must be reversed too?

Funny how decades of record warmth are ignored, but a month of record snow is proof that the climate is status quo.

In my location, snow generally falls when it is warmer. January is usually less snow, because it becomes too cold for large snowfalls. The big snow we were supposed to get here this weekend ended up being a snow/sleet/rain event, because the temps actually rose above freezing.

Enjoy your woodburner. *shrugs*

Where did I say or jumped to conclusion that this year will be the the coldest?

It's the fact that weather changes on her own accord and that we continue to have hot and cold weather w/o man's help. We had our record cold in September and December is already looking to be another record cold month for the United States according to NOAA. If you want to look at temp trend then understand that according to physicist Luboš Motl found that there were no statistically significant warming since 1995. Yet people continue to insist that several tenths of a degree change since 1900s to present is significant when it's not compared to the historical and geologic past.
The Reference Frame: No statistically significant warming since 1995

Please note the difference between a record cool month and record cool year. October was the third coolest/coldest October on record. No where did I conclude anything about a record cool/cold year. Again, where did I say or jumped to conclusion that this year will be the the coldest?

Here's the problem with trying to forecast the weather 3 months out. It's undpredictable.

Compare NOAA's forecast on temperature departure for Oct - Dec 2009 with lightere to darker brown on increasing temperature departure.

Map of U.S. that show actual cooler than normal temperature results that is nearly the opposite of the prediction for above normal temp map.

Now, if these climate models that forecasters use are unable to predict reliable forecast over the the next three months, then tell me what logic is there to blindly adhere to a faith trusting a forecast 100 years out for weather or even for climate? It'd be utter, utter folly.

ADDENDUM: Reason for editing. I added picture descriptions because Jiro pointed it out yet he continues not to follow through his own advice. I make a point to try and include descriptions for embedded pictures when asked or reminded. I'm only human. Although it is not my thing to intentionally and purposely ignore describing pictures that I embedded in AD just to score points at the cost of leaving out readers with vision problems. I refuse to use them as pawns. Jiro should be ashamed of this method of his to purposely discriminate and ignore such a request. :nono:

Please describe the pictures. This will help those who may not have access to a picture. Twice already in this thread you didn't describe the pictures.

Aren't some of y'all inspiring meterologists or just into weather extremely? My fiancee' is an aspiring meterolgist and stormchaser!

but yeah..snow is awesome but cold weather sucks! boo! :aw:

I've been a weather nut since I was little. So, it comes naturally to me on the intricacies of weather or meteorological science.

Have you thought about being a meterolgist? And did you have experience in storm chasing? I watch the Discovery channel show called Stormchasers...I thought it was neat especially with Reed Timmer being the dominator! :giggle: I have chased with my fiancee alot of times especially with storms and tornados..I used to be afraid of them but not anymore! :P

It's the picture of map of North America provided by NOAA for its forecast on temperature departure. The caption on above - Oct-Nov-Dec 2009. There is a temperature range from lighter orange to darker orange where lighter orange describes a lighter temperature (correct me if I'm wrong). Upper and Lower Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Michigan, and Wisconsin have medium-shaded color. ... [detail to be added by koko if he wants to]

you.... have to be kidding me with that visual description of pictures you provided. Please give a little more detail than that. Let's not get discriminatory in here. See red bold print above as an example of detailed visual description. It's not completed but since you provided this picture, it's up to you to complete the detailed visual description.

 In case you didn't know, I respond appropriately when the situation requires it. DBers have not been participating in our threads for quite a while so based on the current situation, I feel no needed to provide visual description. However, I will gladly provide so when requested and when I see DBers participating in our threads. :)

Discriminatory Practice? Not at all! It isn't discrimination if I've never refused to provide description when requested by DBers. :cool2: Now let's attack argument, not the ADer, right? :)

Perhaps, I will ask my fiancee' on what he has to say about this since he knows more about weather than I do. You can always ask Reed Timmer about it! :giggle:

They could be reading for all we know. You contradict yourself on what you require of me to describe pictures by making those requests over the last few days. And I have complied. Since you say you won't do it unless a DBer request it, which is fine, but that makes you a full blown hypocrite when you demand that I include pictorial discriptions of an embedded picture. Your actions prove discriminatory and hypocritical.

Next time, do not bother on demanding that I include pictorial descriptions for my embedded pictures since you refuse to do yours when I remind you of it.

Actions that are both discriminatory and hypocritical.

still on that? oye oye! tapeworm in your bottom? Let me help you remember - it is you asked me to describe the pictures but I find it hypocritical of you to demand so when you do not do it on your part - hence... deafskeptic's scoffed post at you :)

now are you still going to harp on it or are you going to be a strongman and move on? :cool2:

That is NOT YOUR CONCERN SINCE YOU REFUSE TO DO YOUR OWN DESCRIPTIONS OF YOUR OWN EMBEDDED PICTURES!!!

If the descriptions are inadequate I'll wait for a DBer request for more descriptions....not from you since you've proven to be a hypocrite in this matter. Unreal, man.
