I am planning on buying different brand "N" Wireless Router, I want the one that "shut up and run!" router. Basically, I'm looking for router that can handle heavy bandwidth usage because two of my kids use online game on both PC and I use VP whenever I wish to use. Belkin N Router crashes over heavy bandwidth load..

I wish I could experiment different brands of routers but don't have $$ or anyone who owns it (betcha they don't want me mess with their router anyway).

I know there are Gamer router, MIMO Router and regular "N" router. Questions is that which router can handle heavy VP Video/Data bandwidth well without crashing or locking up.. Although there are list of recommend routers on the list for VP such as Sorenson, Z340, Purple, Viable and other VP. There are some issue with few recommend router such as firmware and setups even though it works. I just want "N" router that is compatible with ALL VP!! so I won't have to worry about hassle to tweak, fix or buy different router again.

If you are an VP installer and experience with different router, which "N" Wireless router doesn't have any problem with different VP brands. You can tell me which is the best.. Also don't want the one that runs hot under the load. Hot router can crash easily. I didn't care if setup is easy or complicated, I'm good with it.

List of "N" Wireless router brands (I don't care if it's Gamer, MIMO, or just plain ol' one).. Belkin is out of my list..

D-Link
Linksys
Netgear
Buffalo
ActionTec
Trendnet
Cisco
and some odd brands that are not on the lists

Please submit suggestions and explainations.

I would pick out which would be the best :hmm:

Thanks

I would recommend D-Link, Back in the days there were issues with Linksys which is under Cisco. Netgear is out of my list since it had issues with purplemail on my MVP after it was port forwarded.

D-Link, of course.

When after I get own modem then I'm going kick Linksys out and replace into D-Link.

Videophone does work with Linksys but require alot of configuration.

Dlink, man!

I have Dlink DIR-655 it starts up and runs like charm, however it still drops off from time to time. Tell you this, it is not as bad as other router I had dealt with. Forget DIR-615, it is not worth the investment. I am not sure about DIR 628 or DI-625 however, from my understand of your situation, if you can afford, it would be DIR-828 or something like that.

Please remember, anytime you add a wireless host to single access point of any kind, the speed WILL decrease.

Also, other thing about Dlink that I like very much is when you want to log in Dlink router, you have the option to use GUI verification code, which means that the machine can not spoof because of this. That is additional layer of security.

I am still stand on this, wireless is NOT 100% secured no matter how hard you try. What you can do is be viligant and set up as many security point on wireless, like MAC filter, do not broadcast SSID, etc.

Newegg.com - D-Link DGL-4500 IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11a/b/g, IEEE802.11n Draft Xtreme N Gaming Router - Wireless Routers

This is work great for VP. I know few of people own exactly one like that and work great with gamer and VP. They don't complained about drop or slow down since. Cheap router is not great for gamer.

Yup, It's typical when adding host, it slows down. My router is chock full of ethernet wires plugged in and plus wireless to my laptop. I recalled all 3 ports hooked up to 3 PC, two in basement and one in garage and garage pc was downloading update and two pc my sons were playing online games on it PLUS I was using laptop wireless browsing net. I did noticed the performance dropped greatly. After a while, Belkin router crashed :giggle:

Thanks for info about DIR-655, I was looking at it the first thing cuz I want the "mean and strong" one. So sound like a D-Link "N" Wireless Gaming router is for me.

Thanks!! :thumb:

:eek2: $149.99 :Ohno: I like that router.. but... $$$ I'll check through Ebay anyway.

I am fully aware that cheap router are not for gamer. My sons playing online games on two PC at the same time bears down hard on Belkin N router. I had to reboot everytime. Belkin N wireless router I bought was $80 last year. That's why it's cheap. It's time for me to get better and meaner stronger N wireless router cuz soon my sons would play better online game that demand lot of bandwidth ect enough to murder cheap router..

I have used D-Link wireless "N" router for my home network plus VP and it has worked so great.

D-link, which I agree with the others, I have one powerful and badass one in the garage but how about Apple Airport extreme, I have that at home and it can handle anything -- it works like a charm too, while I on VP, my brother gaming on the PC, dad raoming on wireless via mac laptop... me playing PS3 online -- still works great.

DO NOT GET NETGEAR!!!!
Wish someone would have told me before I bought mine a year ago. I've also had several Linksys as well but they can't handle the load either. D-Link will be the next purchase for me.

netgear as it is today has improved. I have a 3G mobile broadband wireless router and it works lilke a charm

This router is what I have now.

I have a linksys Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router that handles VP200, Xbox 360, two PCs, and Iphone. It didn't decrease the speed and no lag while playing video games. it's not hard to config the router. All you do is set up 125 on DMZ and enable.

I won Dlink Extreme N Router DIR-655 for $82 with free sh/h! I had to snipe less than a minute :giggle: .. Paid for it and now waiting for seller to ship it to me. It's a new router tho..

Now looking foward to new router to be shipped and hook it up once I receive it.

Now that I can kiss my Belkin router good bye!!!

I didn't realized that DIR-655 does have USB port that I can plug in USB printer or USB storage and access it through home networking. So that I don't have to leave my system running 24/7 as a printer server. Nice addition!!

Now I joined D-Link bandwagon!

PS: Thankyou everyone for suggestion, D-link way to go!! :thumb:

My friend who had similiar Belkin N router and she ordered Dlink DIR-625 through Newegg.com. She is looking foward to get rid of Belkin too. Had same issue like I have and need it for her Z340 wirelessly too. She doesn't use broadband as much as I do. She aske me to go over to her place and set it up and her husband is getting impatient and he can't wait to use VP again

Why you bought the Belki N router in first place without read the review?

Keep in mind DIR-655 is not design for gamer like FPS and RPG.

Just FYI, there is a catch with this nice additional feature, USB.... You can use this with anything that needs USB connection, with some device, only one computer can access at a time, and need to be logged off before other computer can access. That applies to USB storage device. For printer, it won't be a problem sharing with other computers. I have that, and not using it anyway. I ended up bought a NAS, and throw in two HD and set RAID 1 so that I won't worry about losing data. RAID 1 requires two hard drives, they both have same files (Mirrored) on it meaning if one fails, other will still have files for me to retrieve.

DIY server is way better than NAS (home user) for speed, more feature, FTP, desktop remote,etc..

RAID 1 is very old technology. NAS is poor file transfer speed for the large files.

NAS is big joke!

I bought the belkin router last year March and was in a hurry to replace the old one that went dead. That time, "N" was new after Pre-N.. I tried to find review and it wasn't much. It just came out when I bought it. My neighbor have Belkin Pre-N router and I kinda ante it up to N. Also last year my sons wasn't even in deep with online game till this year.

I am fully aware that it's not design for gamer, It just that I want it handle heavy bandwidth usage. My kids are playing Online Lego game, Pirates of the Carribean, Wizard 101, Runescape and several more.

Cool.. I just want to plug in multi-function printer and forget it so that my wife and family can use it anytime without holler me to get dedicated system up and running for printer.
