Hi everyone,

Do any of you use an inhaler for allergies?

The reason I ask is because my GP just prescribed Albuterol for my allergies to relieve my dry cough and coughing spells that I have when I inhale, laugh, am around dust or out in the cold.

I've never been evaluated for asthma, but I think my coughing fits are due to allergies as opposed to asthma unless my allergies are asthma related.

When I see my GP next, I will ask her about what she thinks my coughing is attributed to.

It doesn't really matter to me one way or the other just as long as I can get it under control.

Right now, I use Advair Diskus and yes, Albuterol. It helps me a lot, as when I wake up in the AM, I'm usually "stopped up" with fluid and do blow a lot.

Sometimes I have trouble breathing, depends upon the weather. Albuterol has helped me the most! I'm not allergic to animals, but am to "dust mites". I use special filters for my furnace and if I lay or sit on the carpet on the floor for awhile, I start sneezing and blowing.

Will be moving soon and my house will have all wood floors! No more carpet for me....I think this will make a difference somewhat!

Asthma runs in my family and I have it also, so the inhalers do the job for me. I've only had a few bad attacks, not very often. I just avoid any places that are musky, moldy and mildew. Smoke can be a culprit, also.

Yes I have severe asthma and have used albuterol rescue inhalers for many years.

They are very effective.

Smoke bothers me as well.

In fact, smoke is what gives me the greatest difficulty.

After having read your post, I'm beginning to wonder if I don't have asthma that is caused by allergies.

However, I don't want a diagnosis -- I'm just wondering if any of you use an inhaler for allergies or asthma and how it has worked for you.

When I see my GP again, I will ask her about the possibility of me having asthma just to find out what her thoughts are.

Right now I use an air purifier in every room, but it isn't enough due to the wall-to-wall carpeting in my apartment and the fact that I live in a wooded area which has lots of weeds, flowers, grass and trees.

I can't keep my windows open 90% of the time because it causes me to start sneezing and coughing as well to become very congested.

I'm glad Albuterol works well for you. :) Hopefully I will have similar results!

By the way, I would LOVE to live somewhere that only had wood floors! My sister's home has wood floors and I rarely have any symptoms when I visit her.

Those air purifiers that do something with ions can be very bad for asthma. I don't remember why but the doctor told me not to use those.

That's good to hear Bott. I'm also glad it works well for you. :)

From what my GP told me, Albuterol should help with my dry cough (when it is persistent due to allergies) and coughing spells.

I plan to pick up my prescription tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see how well it works for me.

Really? I was always told they are good for allergies which is why I use them. Perhaps I should see an allergist who can explain all of this to me.

Speaking of which, the only reason I've never seen an allergist before is because my allergies have been under control with Fexofenadine for the past 2 years.

It is only recently that I started having symptoms during the afternoon, evening and nighttime hours.

I also wanted to add that my GP was the one who told me I have year round allergies. She has seen me quite a few times during an allergy attack which is how I found out I have them. From what she told me, my allergies are considered severe, but have been under control over the past 2 years. It is only recently that I started having worsening symptoms.

I just checked on that about ionizer purifiers and they emit ozone which is why they are bad for asthma.

With HEPA filters are the type of air purifier we use and these are okay.

What is a HEPA filter? The air purifiers I use have filters inside them and are made by Hamilton Beach if that makes a difference.

I am sure that is good. I don't think the ionizer kind uses filters, so you should have the right kind already.

I've seen ionizers before, but my GP told me that air purifiers with filters in them were the ones I should look for. That's exactly what I bought (I've had them for a number of years) and they do seem to make a difference. They don't eliminate my symptoms completely, but I notice I can breathe alot easier with them than I can without them.

Bott and robin,

I posted my symptoms on an allergy message board and was told by someone who has had asthma for over 20 years that it sounds like I may have a mild case.

He outlined some of the other symptoms of asthma (stuffy, runny or congested nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, headache, tiredness, throat clearing) which I also have in addition to coughing.

He said it's possible to have asthma that causes coughing, but not wheezing.

With this being the case, I plan to ask my GP about this when I see her next. I'd rather not schedule a specific appointment for this now because I will need to update her anyways on my CTS surgery.

Aside from that, I already have my nasal spray and Albuterol which should help give me some relief.

I just read several medical articles about allergy-induced asthma and this describes me perfectly. I have a number of triggers that were listed and all of the symptoms. I will definitely speak to my GP about this further and ask for a referral to an allergist to have a PFT done.
