There been a lot of talk on the news that some schools are putting a ban on hugging. What do people think about this?

At my childs school, they do not hug. They say it could be taken wrong and sexual harrassment charges could be filed. It is sad to see the world coming to this. My children used to run up and hug their friends and teachers. Sad...

I think that they're getting a bit carried away with the hugging thing.

I would understand if schools wanted to ban kissing... or hugging if it was more than "hugging" where inappropriate places were being touched.

But hugging is pretty much the furthest anyone can go with being friendly and nothing more.

If they pass this ban, then it will lead to more bans being issued... such as bans on shanking hands, back patting, or even touching.

If it does indeed go that far, then I will feel sorry for deaf students who rely on touch for getting attention. We'll turn a friendly school environment to an isolated loner school environment. :Ohno:

At our district we are allowed sideways hugs around the shoulder with one arm, but no face to face hug as someone could take it the wrong way.

It's sad that this world is coming down to this. I used to love it when my teachers would hug me when I was little, but now, forget it. Some kids don't get any affection at home and now they can't even seek it out at school.

There are some schools (one I'm thinking from the recent news is in Virginia) that have ZERO touching policies... kind of sad huh?? No hi-5's nothing!!!

If that were the case then how does the football team practice if there is a no touching policy? Sounds to me like the whole team would be violation because as I recall football was a full-contact sport.

You know, I am really happy that I was young child and was able to hug anybody in 1990's, and didn't worry about having troubles at all. Now, I'm sad for young children who are 00's and younger... =/

Too many incidents of sexual harrassment in the school environment...many kids do not know (or do not care) about boundaries anymore. I'm for banning it.

ARe u joking that banning the hugging is going to occur in USA?

Wow here smacking has been banned both in home school and in public places.
I would rather see smacking banned than hugging. What the world coming into a very cold and cruel place where no love is showing. How are those kids going to learn how to love someone when they are older which can create more dyfustionlal issues in those kids on what's right and what's wrong and get them even more confused.

It going to be a sad world if that day is to come!

I agree, Dixie. One of my nephews teaches kindergarten and first grade, depending on where he is needed. It bothers him no end that one of his kids can fall on the playground and scrape their knee, and he cannot offer a hug to comfort them.

I did not think of that! It would be awful if you were not allow to touch a deaf student in school to get their attention! I think there is nothing wrong about two friends hugging , it nice to get a hug if you're having a bad day at school or home! We need more hugs in the world! People are getting too up tight , there are lot more importants thing to wrong about!

Good question... I don't know if the school im thinking of has a fb team, I seem to recall it was a middle school and not all of them have fb teams... ya know??

I think some rules SHOULD be in place, (just thinking about some stuff kids did when I was in HS) but a zero touch policy might be a bit much.

I think it's upright ridiculous! My son loves to give/receive hugs and I had to tell him that he should not give hugs at school to anyone because hugging may considered sexual harassment. He doesn't understand, who can understand this at the age of 9?

I agree, one thing (ban) will lead to another. There is nothing wrong with hugging.

this is ridiculous!

There´re no rules in school policy about hugs because the students know the common sense if they want to hug each other. It´s okay with school policy...

I can´t believe that hug consider to be sex harrassment. *shake my head*

I am thinking. Do you know that maybe the schools are afraid of diseases like Swine Flu, AIDS or any outrageous diseases that is affecting us. Power On said less on the disease. There have been too many germs that we can not take the risk to die from. No one want to go through a epidemic if the diseases are that bad. There are some local towns say no shaking hands and always wash hands with soap and water. That is what they are concern about. We do have a right to hug anytime we feel like hugging for the friendship and happiness but now we have to protect ourselves from being sick if we have strange diseases. There is nothing to fight back just like cancer. Ugh. I love to hug myself too. We will have to do what they say just to be cautious so that we don't get sick with Swine flu. :ugh:

I think the ban on hugging is ridiculous - and the potential repercussions are vastly more bad than good!

Firstly, touch is a vital psychological need for humans - imagine growing up, never getting a hug from a friend, a parent or a even a pat on the back. How would you feel about yourself, or about other people? Would you have strong friendships, or just have many people who know your name and give a smile to?

Second, using the argument of 'sexual harrassment' is just lousy. "Exploring sexuality" arguments aside, school children of a young age don't go about to one another and think; "Wow, what a sexy bod! I'm gonna grab a piece of that!" Seriously, all you need are guidelines about what is not acceptable - and that should be more to protect children from abuse from adults than to restrain children from being happy, loving kids!

As for the spread of disease - banning hugging to stop the spread of the latest media-craze disease is like banning all driving in any weather to cut down on rain-related accidents. If the child has a disease that is bad enough to warrant banning hugging, the child should stay home to recover. Washing hands and other hygeine practises is enough, because even with kids it is easy to say "if you have a sniffle, don't hug your friends or you could make them sick too".

That's my rant about it.
