MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - A 4-year-old girl in Southern California died after she climbed into a washing machine that began tumbling when her toddler brother hit its simple push-button start.

Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said Kayley Ishii apparently climbed into the front-loading washer Monday afternoon. Her 15-month-old brother either bumped or pushed the button to start the machine.

Amormino said the machine's controls were only 20 inches from the floor and the start switch was a simple push button. The girl was in the water-filled, tumbling machine for at least two minutes before her mother found her.

An autopsy Tuesday found Kayley died of blunt force trauma and the death was ruled accidental.

So sad :(:(

What company would have the switch or button a few inches from the floor!! Geez! How horrible.

That was what I was thinking! What washing machine has controls that 20 inches from the floor?

How horrible this tragedy is!

What a tragedy! I've never seen a washer with the controls located so close to the floor. I can't imagine why the manufacturer would put them there.

I wonder what manufacturer made this? :dunno2:

I wouldn't know. It could be that it was imported from somewhere. I just can't recall ever seeing an American made washing machine like that, and I've been around awhile.:giggle:

Maybe someone altered it, too. It has me puzzled.

I wonder that, too.

I did a quick web search, and scrolled front load washer pictures of various brands, and I didn't see any with a button that low. I wonder if it's a modification that the owner installed? :dunno:

If it is a standard product design, then a safety recall may be coming.

Yeah, it doesn't even make ergonomic design sense.

That is sad and wondering where is the washing machine if it was out of sight then that the problem. Mine washing machine and dryer is in my sight all the times. Even thou I have a 12 yrs old son but he does have half brothers who are 4 and 5 yrs old. Also where was the mother when it was happened?

Yeah, it doesn't even make ergonomic design sense.

The only thing I could think is if someone had limited use of their arms and needed to turn it on with their foot. Or perhaps someone that used a wheelchair could reach it better. I just don't know.
