Does anyone know a good website that has chatting but also able to use a webcam to do signing? I am hearing but I am wanting to work on my ASL because I don't have anyone around me to practice with. Any suggestions?

Would you be using this webcam to communicate with others or just to see yourself signing?

Because if you want to see yourself signing--stand in front of a mirror. It's cheaper!

 no its not just by myself because I need resposes and to be able to ask questions.

How does it work? does it cost money? does it use my regular phone service?

No, get free sorenson vp200 or HOVRS MVP but request high speed internet. Why not to apply to get new videophone?

It's only free for Deafs. Since he is hearing, he would have to pay for a new vp-200.

Oh i see. Do you know to use ASL? Do You have webcam? Do you have high speed internet?

I know some ASL, I am an ASL student working on becoming an ASL interpreter. I still have a long ways to go though but that is why I want to be able to talk to Deaf in ASL and not text. Gives me practice and to me it would build better friendships. I do have a webcam and highspeed internet. But I dont know any places to use it.

Isn't there a surgery that can take care of that? I know Opthalmologists deal with that.

nope. at the present time, there are no treatments for retinal diseases like rop. that's okay with me though. blindness is the only thing i've ever known, so i can't miss what i never had. :)

That is true. I hope I am not asking too many questions. What device do you use that makes it so you know what we say?

i don't mind questions, so if you'd like to ask me about deafblindness, feel free. :) i use a braille display (braille star 40) and screen reader (window-eyes) to read ad as well as e-mail, text documents and the internet. the screen reader takes all information that appears on the computer screen and sends it to the braille display. the screen reader can also read this information aloud using speech synthesis. i'm able to move around the screen (up, down, left, right, character by character, word by word, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, page by page) by issuing keyboard commands to the screen reader and braille display. to learn more about how braille displays work, check out this link:

You can got free Viable Vision software for webcam.

web cams

I am also hearing (hoh more and more though) and have been studying ASL for about 16 years on and off. (My husband teaches at a local university so I get free tuition!!)

I don't get to go take classes as much as I would like to, and sometimes I have to quit in the middle of a semester as I have really bad asthma and can't do my assignments over the phone. A web cam would maybe help me finish a class when I am in the hospital or house-bound.

I used to have one but it was a little jerky and slow...We need to find out about quality webcams and exchange e-mail addresses! I would love to be able to practice with and get more comfortable with my signing.
