Verizon FiOS TV with HDTV BOX - poor Caption

We have FiOS TV. We are not happy with HDTV BOX (Motorola QIP6414-2 because poor qualtiy CC. Too fast CC that we can't read 7 words in less 1 second. Captions get skipped or appear too late and vanish immediately. Also, some are fine but poor quality read like fad texts.

Yesterday morning, Verizon Tech person came here to see. He understand why..... He think that Motorola is not very good for us. I asked him about TIVO HD. He does not know much about Tivo.

Any deaf people has good experience TIVO HD?

same DCT6416 for CableTV, they are weak CC becuase DCT6416 is programmer with CPU is very slow, real-time (3 line scroll) are weak too, real-time like News, Sport, etc.. I turn off DCT6416's CC and swtich 480i and turn on CC on HDTV, very smooth CC and real-time too

you can buy sony, jvc, samsung, etc.. with CableCard will be smooth than Motorola

I will quit DCT6416 next year, Feb 2009 will no longer Analog after DVR will more techology for Sony, JVC, etc.. soon, I will buy Sony DVR, if Sony have DVR future

Thank you for some information.

We have two HDTV (Sony LCD and Panasonic Plasma).

Yesterday, I asked FiOS Tech person about Cablecard. He does not familiar. He said Cablecard then not need HDTV box.

I know they will have Cablecard by June, 2008.

I have exact same issue with Motorola DVR by Cox Cable, only work around is to set the SD channel to 480i mode and let your TV decode the captions.. So far, I have no issue with HD channel in 1080 mode with box do the captioning.

As for Tivo3, it work FLAWLESSLY with built-in CC. I had cable card and it works great unforunately, many of HD channels and digital channels are moving to SDV (Switched Digital Video). It wont work on Tivo3 with cable card due to Tivo can't communicate 2 way with cable card. Tivo is aware of this and working on USB cable card external box to allow communication 2 ways. See SDV FAQ - TiVo Community for more details on SDV.

FiOS TV is required to provide you the cable cards (you need 2 for tivo due to dual tuners). if they claims that they dont support Tivo3, that is BS and tell them FCC REQUIRES cable card to work with cerified devices.. Tivo3 is one of such device.

The Feb 2009 deadline only applies to Over the Air (OTA) antenna. Cable or Satellite do not apply to Feb 2009 deadline.

Peter... That's off topic.

DVR is stand for Digital Video Recorder. I do not keep DVR. When, I cancel my plan then we have to return HDTV with DVR back to Verizon FiOS.

I am not worry.... Our two HDTV(s) have build-in ATSC.
NTSC will no longer on middle of Feb 2009.
Many older TV do not have built-in ATSC then need special DTV or sign up with Cable or Satelite.

Original.... they had planning: NTSC will black-out by Dec 2006 but many people are not ready. They changed date from Dec 2007 to Feb 2009. Warning everyone to know to be ready by Feb 2009.

Most important to check DVD Recorder with built-in ATSC. Stay away NTSC. Lot people did not pay attention on DVD Recorder inculde built-in ATSC.

I have the same situation, Verizon Fios with HDTV. I believe it has to do with the upconversion to HDTV. We have two Fios boxes, one with an HDTV and one on a regular TV. Only the HDTV one has the problem, the captions are fine on the regular TV. I researched this online one time and it is the upconversion that is the problem. Captions get lost in the upconversion.

First you said DVR and then you said DVD Recorder. Do you mean the same thing? I have a DVD recorder and I never had problems with it. When I convert movies from VHS to DVD the captions are fine. It seems like a separate issue from what this thread is talking about?

Yes, we have two HDTV BOXes (one with DVR) and one standard box. I noticed that Standard BOX's CC are fine.

I did try to configure on HDTV Box's CC but no way to change like color texts, size fonts, and style fonts. Still Lock!!! No way to make un-lock.
Answer

Still do not know what I want to buy Tivo HD box.

I explain someone that I am not worry about Feb 2009.
Just watch out.... They have many DVD recorder without ATSC which is not good for after Feb 2009.

There is no 1080p for network yet. Just HDTV for blu-ray player. 720p is better than 1080i. It's true.

Thank u for information. I guess that Verizon FiOS will not support HR21-700 HD DVR. Your HR21-700 is great for DirecTV HD. Tonight, I will try to call Verizon FiOS customer support about HR21-700 HD DVR

1080i looks awful on a huge TV because it scans at 540 lines at one time which is interlaced process.

Right. I learned from old coworker in 3 years ago. He always told me that's 720p is better than 1080i . Later I noticed between 1080i and 720p. He was right. Darn. So I found and perfect example for you.

darkage, Check the links out.
Banjo's World: Search results for 720p

Another example pictures.

Yes, you are correct, but if OTA, no longer VHS Player or rewrite dvd player are problem, maybe JVC, Sony, will techology both OTA and CableTV in one DVR than write DVD and VHS Player future
