I don't think it had to do anything with the intent to violate the ADA but rather it was a security issue. Millons of dollars are transacted each day on eBay where security and trust are paramount that protect both the consumers and sellers.

Who has intent to violate the ADA? I'm sure it happens inadvertently most of the time.

Maybe it's because they think relay system are frauds and do not trust IPRelay and thinks VRS is the same as IPRelay as fraudsters.

Well, the recent VRS case (Yeh, et al) certainly do not help the picture.

Exactly. I doubt anyone says, "I am going to take this action to violate the ADA!.":giggle:

Unintentional violation is still violation.

Good thing I registered with eBay long time ago as a seller. :)

I attempted to register but turns out I was required to do that, so I couldn't be bothered.

It is great for them to take this legal action against Ebay. I wanted to sell some collectible items but I got completely frustrated by their ridiculous vocal/auditory verification process.

I hope Ebay have realized that they subconsicously created a hardship for Deaf and hard of hearing sellers so they will have to find a better way to accommodate them.

It make me think about my videophone number. So, I decide to check on whitepages.com to see if my number does reverse. Yep, it did, even where estimate locate is mine. So, it's not fraud as it seem so.

It is unexcuse to deny any deaf people to sell anything from ebay because they are unable to get call for verification.

It is ebay's responsible to take alternative security measure for anyone who is unable to call since ebay is just wealthy company so they could find out to do it.

In year ago, when I sell my cell phone on ebay so have ask my relative to verify the call, it is VERY un-independent.

WBBM Radio Chicago report:

Since birth, Melissa Earll says, she has not had normal hearing. And now?

"I am profoundly deaf."

She says she has overcome challenges before. And now she says the obstacle in her way is eBay.

She says eBay told her to be a seller, she had to get a code by phone. And she cannot use a phone to hear.

"eBay asked if my mom and dad were available. I'm a 40-something-year-old adult woman and that was hugely embarrassing, hugely demeaning, and it made me angry.

Hmmm,
Does anyone know this woman personally ? I don't so I have a few questions. Can this woman sign or not ? If she can and she has already has internet connection for selling ebay stuff!!! Granted it may not be high speed, but it can be upgraded, once she knows what's availab le for her. time to get a VRS videophone equipment ? does she already have one ? How did she contact ebay? ttd? VRS ? who knows.

I agree that ebay needs find a way to accomodate the deaf/hoh so they can sell stuff. Afterall, it's still profit for evilbay - opps I mean Ebay.

Perhaps they should have someone designated for issues like this and have a checklist for deaf/hoh. something like this:

1. If I encounter a deaf/hoh then does VRS number match address on ebay form?
2. can I call them through the VRS and carry on a conversation?
3. during conversation, does my questions match what's on the seller application form?
If yes, then approve! Not that hard!

Ebay has an obligation to meet all its customer's needs

I don't have this problem with ebay. I have had an ebay account myself for a long time. Never had to verify anything over the phone.

Maybe not- but what about the current deaf/hoh who wants to start selling and get an account. In past it was easy, like mine was too, but now? how is that fair for others ?
