I thought of this when I read the website...

8,830,026: Americans on Disability Hits New Record for 192nd Straight Month | CNS News

Some of you probably won't reveal this here, partially because it may be a source of embarrassment.

Also. In an event of economic armageddon, suppose disability income will be cut off? How would you cope with that?

I'd like to hear some comments.

I'm sure those people will find ways to adapt if their SSI/SSDI were cut. At least, I hope they can adapt.

I hope they would find a job as a part time in order to help by paying ss taxes to keep ssa alive. :)

I believe that fast growing of SSDI is related to baby boomers, when they get older and become disabled before 65.

MRA (minimum retirement age) for SS retirement is 62 so I believe that SSA pays SSDI to anyone who become disabled before that age, otherwise they pay SS retirement. In other words, SSDI is automatically converted to SS retirement at the age of 62 (amount stays the same anyway).

Edited: I may be wrong since I was thinking of the old policy. I think it is a full retirement age, not MRA. I will check FAQ at ssa.gov later. I have to go to work now.

Edited: Ok, I was wrong about automatic convert at MRA.

I think many baby boomers at 50's ages receive disability benefit after no longer to work because of illness, disabled, health problem and physical issues. The couple of my ex coworkers receive disability benefits because they have severe back injury and issue with spinal cord, so they are over 50.

I have been on SSDI since 1985. Some of it was due to my illness and the other due to me being deaf. But you are allowed to make a certain amount of money every month and still recieve benefits.

I can only say to those on disability-enjoy it while you can. Save up for a rainy day and plan ahead. Cuts will trickle down to you-its just a matter of time and there is nothing you or I can do about it.

Global econmy is broke :(

Well - I would be S.O.L. if I lost my disability. I have multiple reasons for being on it and it is less than half of what I made when I did work. Currently, I am unable to find work at all given the issues I have.

For those already on ss - there is no way to save up. they are already broke.

Yes- its called SGA allowable amounts.

We shouldnt have to justify ourselves ... esp. when no one will give us jobs that we can live on.

oh -- maybe we need a history lesson on why our SS is depleting FAST!
HISTORY LESSON ON SOCIAL SECURITY!!
THE TRUE FACTS!
Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn't know this.
It's easy to check out, if you don't believe it. Be sure and show it to your family
and friends. They need a little history lesson on what's what and it doesn't matter
whether you are Democrat or Republican. Facts are Facts.

Social Security Cards up until the 1980s expressly stated the number and
card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the
United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the
message, NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION, was removed.

Our Social Security
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social
Security (FICA) Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be
Completely voluntary,

No longer Voluntary

2.) That the participants would only have to pay
1% of the first $1,400 of their annual
Incomes into the Program,

Now 7.65%
on the first $90,000

3.) That the money the participants elected to put
into the Program would be deductible from
their income for tax purposes each year,

No longer tax deductible

4.) That the money the participants put into the
independent 'Trust Fund' rather than into the
general operating fund, and therefore, would
only be used to fund the Social Security
Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,

Under Johnson the money was moved to
The General Fund and Spent

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed
as income.

Under Clinton & Gore
Up to 85% of your Social Security can be Taxed

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are
now receiving a Social Security check every month --
and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of
the money we paid to the Federal government to 'put
away' -- you may be interested in the following:

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ----

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the
independent 'Trust Fund' and put it into the
general fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically
controlled House and Senate.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax
deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -----

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social
Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the
'tie-breaking' deciding vote as President of the
Senate, while he was Vice President of the US

------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- -

Q: Which Political Party decided to start
giving annuity payments to immigrants?

AND MY FAVORITE:

A: That's right!

Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party.
Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65,
began to receive Social Security payments! The
Democratic Party gave these payments to them,
even though they never paid a dime into it!

------------ -- ------------ --------- ----- ------------ --------- ---------

Then, after violating the original contract (FICA),
the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want
to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!
If enough people receive this, maybe a seed of
awareness will be planted and maybe changes will
evolve.
But it's worth a try.
How many people can YOU send this to?
IMPORTANT UPDATE....Social Security Just Went Up 2% On 1/1/2013. I Hope You Obama Fans Realize He Lied To You About Not Raising Taxes On The Poor & Middle Class.

Not surprised! I know it all along that most politicians are just full of BS since years before FDR. I have seen too many laws that already violated against US constitutions. Sad

But on brighter side, this isn't too bad as compare as to France (Scary!)

Yes, same here.

I dont think they will completely cut most off but you most likely will see a smaller check.

Possibly SSI will be cut down but SSDI and SS retirement benefits will not be legally cut down since those recipients paid SS taxes while they worked for years and years. SSI recipients didn't.

I checked the document about sequester, I found SSA will receive some of cut but none of benefits will be cut, so usually some people works in office will get lay off or furloughed.

Your wrong, and I am not going to repeat because history is bound to repeat, just watch and be prepared to drop your jaw when your gonna retire.

Reason?

Eventually there will be more people on retirement roll than these who is on pay roll, that is where the problem is.

If my memory serves me right, in 1960 12 employees support each retirees on SS benefits, very soon there will be only 3 or 4 employees supporting each retirees on SS benefits. What does that tells you? Its evidently that the money is going run out anytime soon. UNLESS these young generations decided to have fun in bed and produce more babies, perhaps at rate of 3x of whats going rate at this time then we will be fine but other than that, we are doomed eventually. Its all about mathematical equality.

This is a good point. However, nothing is stopping the government which has raided the SS cookie jar before from raiding it again.

If it ever got to the point were there were no more disability benefit, you can bet that a lot of non-disabled people would be hurting too. In that situation, we would all be in the same boat.

AND create more jobs - very, very important.

We could get more young immigrants if American couples are unable to producing more babies.
