What is your JOB?

I'm a licensed massage therapist. Not sure how much I made last year, I'm still waiting on some 1099, but def not as much as I made the year before, which was 40k on the books, if I had to guess maybe 8k in cash tips.

Pros, you make people feel better, and it's a job where your is really really appreciated. I love love love getting hugs from people, almost as much as I love a big tip ;) but really it's a great feeling being appreciated, I usually get told Im awesome or amazing a few times a day. You just can't put a price on that.

Cons, it's really hard on your hands, well it can be. It's def a physical job, but for me that's also a pro, I'd hate sitting behind a desk. This job, to make good money, you HAVE to be good, you need repeat clientele. The most expensive thing for an LMT is an empty massage table. We don't get paid hourly, we get paid per massage. So when you switch jobs it takes a few months to build up clientele and really start making some $$. That's where I ran into problems last year.

Another pro, this a business where you can work for yourself, which that's the plan for me. Within the next couple years I want to open my own business. I want to go back to school first and get an esthetician license so I could do facials, waxing, body scrubs. Offer more services and he more competitive.

My sister wants to be a massage therapist, is there like anything in special she shluld learn? I mean classeswise or well idk really.

Well her school will cover the basics, Swedish. It kind of depends on if she wants to try to specialize in any modalities. They touch on a lot if them in school, and that might give her an idea of what she might be interested in.

I work two full time positions. Both as a paramedic. In one county, I work two 24 hour shifts(0700 to 0700) every Wednesday and Saturday. In the other, I work 3 thirteen hour shifts(0700 to 2000, Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday) doing the billing(I am also CAC(Certified Ambulance Coder) certified) and QA for another ambulance service. I am off every Monday and Friday(if I don't pick up overtime shifts). I have been a paramedic since 1992. I am topped out on pay for both counties. I average 94k a year combined with 8k being the occasional overtime shift, late call, etc, etc. Pros......I have enough seniority at both jobs(one county, I am 2nd in seniority, other county I am 5th in seniority) that I can get whatever I need and chose my own partner. I also can get off whenever I want without being questioned.(I have accumulated between 300 and 400 hours of vacation time at EACH county.)Cons......My pay rate is so high, I can't leave and expect the same pay rate elsewhere. Also, having to deal with the new, young, gungho medics fresh out of school who think they know it all. I love my job. It's very rewarding. I can't imagine myself doing anything else.

I have my B.A in Special Education and right now I am working in a special education room at a high school :)

Admin assistant and policy officer for the federal government

Seeing as how this is a deaf forum, do you have a hearing problem of some sort? I gotta ask because with paramedics I can see issues with communication especially over literally life and death situations.

I did think about being a doctor or a nurse at one time but changed my mind since I wouldn't want someone to die on me from misunderstanding words especially in an emergency.

I'm a software developer earning around 73k per year but one great perk of my job is the paid vacation time off, I get 27 days off per year plus all major holidays off plus my birthday off. Plus I get a 403(b) plan in which the company matches up to 4% of my contribution making for a nice retirement nest egg. And I get a pension as well.

As for pros and cons, IMO that depends on the company you work at. Some companies are sweatshops like amazon.com while some are cakewalk where if you can write some kind of code you got a job for life. One pro is that it can be a pretty quiet job; you don't get much drama just sitting in front of a computer all day. And a con about that is it does get tiring and boring if all you do is sit in front of the computer all day. I've had people think I don't have a stressful job since I'm at a desk all day but try sitting on your computer from 9am til 5pm and you'll see what I mean.

Another pro of the job is that it's not likely to go away; computers will be around for a while and as long as you keep up with the latest trends and technologies you'll be ok.

But right now I'm trying to find a job that has 25% or more travel; it would allow me to explore the world a little. I just can't see myself being a desk jockey for the rest of my life.

I understand how your feels. I used Canon DSLR technician for 7 years and not really happy due gain weight, headache, etc due sitting too LONG from 7am to 4pm plus 1 hour drive from work to home. I leave it for good and won't go back there again ever. Went another job for networking specialist then not happy with that too. I went to college to learned whole new to become auto/diesel technician and I love it! No headache, good for work out, enjoy drive many different customer's semi-truck and auto car.

I was a manager for Subway restaurants for years. The pay was horrible, but I'm going to have to go back to doing it because my daughters college tuition is breaking my husband financially. That is another reason I want to learn ASL, to serve my customers better. Also being Manger at Subway is more stressful than it seems, gotta keep food costs down, labor costs down, order enough food. It's also physically hard. When the truck comes twice a week, with like 100 boxes of product on it,the manager is the one who is there in the morning and puts the boxes away. The food company just brings them in on a dolly and sits them on the floor. Loading 20 boxes of breadsticks in the freezer will kill your back,or at least my back, since I'm only 5'2.

I am a communications coordinator. I have to keep track of an extensive file library - making sure they are translated, updated, and looking professional. I print and trim everything in-house and get it to the webmaster if need be. I have gotten good at problem solving as there is just no way to prepare for some of the things that come up. I also have lots of obscure facts memorized like how to trim a 9" x 12" sheet to A4 size.
I was stuck at 37k for 6 years and just recently got up to 75k for basically the same responsibilities.
My days are very busy juggling dozens of things at once. Fortunately I am very good at unplugging my brain from work at the end of the day - otherwise my sanity would be compromised.

wow 35k to 75k? In one raise? Aha you must be one happy camper!

I sit 10 hours out of my work day with no lunch or afternoon breaks for $53K a year. With all the sitting, I, and many of my coworkers, are all overweight now due to the lack of exercise and the time we spend in a chair. I'm looking for a job that will actually allow me to move during my day. The only plus side of my job is that I accrue sick leave and annual and take time off when I want without asking for permission....and I was one of the few that worked through the shutdown with pay....

Laura

or even just an exercise ball as a chair can be an improvement! :)

It'd be difficult to type while being on an exercise ball! Plus it has been proven through studies that standing up for a prolonged amount of time is much better than sitting down for the same amount of prolonged time.

I'll take sitting over standing any day! For those who say they're getting fat because they sit to much, why not hit a gym? Wake up a little earlier and exercise or go after work? Try eating healthy? Anywayssssss back to the topic of this thread and jobs!

I work part time for the local newspaper. I put in the public records (police calls, book ins/arrest log, district court reports, and inmate rosters); do the daily calendars for the city and the state; and weekender calendars (there are 4) each week and also help type up letters to the editor into the system. I also do random odd tasks here and there.

Am also a full time college student hoping to get into the radiography program, as I've been at my job for about 13 years and I'm far beyond ready to move on and do something different.

Well, sitting for a prolonged amount of time can lead to back problems among other things. However, like you said, if one sits for a long time, then the best way to avoid becoming overweight or obese is to eat healthier and exercise, not necessarily at a gym, but at home if gym is not an option.

Lucas, I'd like to pose a question to you. What is your dream job?

The problem is that sitting all freaking day can be quite draining. And when you get home you just get exhausted. Just try it, I'll wait. No, don't do it just for one day, do it for a whole week and we'll see how enthusiastic you are about "just hitting the gym"!

I work in an office. Selling insurance, typing up documents, talking on the phone. So I understand all to well the drainage effect that you're feeling. When I first started I would work, then come home tell myself "I'm to tired" and then guess what I would do lol. I'd sit down some more, on the couch, and watch tv. Then after a while my blood sugars started getting bad, I'm a type one diabetic as well, so I said enough is enough and made the effort to get into the gym in the mornings. I started feeling more energized. The only thing stopping you is your attitude.
