One of the reasons I was struck so powerfully by this talk is that Brené Brown is an expert on shame. As a deaf/hoh person in the hearing world, I am constantly ridiculed and shamed for my deafness - that I can't hear or speak like a "normal" person, even though my deafness is not my fault and I can't do absolutely nothing to correct it. Without blushing, everybody can label me "abnormal" and "impaired" (they wouldn't dare use those terms for a black person). These daily messages from nearly every single person I meet for nearly every single minute of nearly every single day sink into my soul, making me feel ashamed of myself for being deaf. It is using the insights on shame from people like Brené Brown that is helping me to recover my sense of worth and belonging.

This is a GREAT talk. Saw this one a couple of months ago.
