Indiana soldier fatally shoots himself during horror comedy flick

An Indiana soldier fatally shot himself during a showing of "Zombieland" at Muncie's Kerasotes Showplace 12 on Monday night, police said.
Investigator Eric Peterson from the Muncie Police Department said Spc. Jacob Sexton, 21, shot himself in the head with a companion's 9mm handgun.
Peterson said officers received a call from the theater at 10:55 p.m.
Earlier in the evening, Sexton, who was from Farmland, Ind., bought a ticket to the R-rated movie and was asked by a theater employee for ID. Witnesses said Sexton was confrontational, replying that he had killed 18 people during his time in the military.
Peterson said a manager at the theater suspected the group had been drinking.
"They were acting loud, disruptive, obnoxious," he said, adding that the manager also said several of them were staggering.
Sexton, his two brothers and a friend then entered the theater to watch the horror comedy film. Police said 20 minutes into the movie, one of Sexton's companions gave him the gun.
Witnesses heard a loud pop and screams from people near Sexton, according to The Associated Press.
Peterson said there was a total of 13 people at the showing, but nobody else was hurt. Several of the people in the theater were Ball State University students. They declined to comment on the death.
Sexton was home on a 15-day leave from serving in the Indiana National Guard. Peterson said Sexton had served in Iraq and was partly through his third tour. He was scheduled to return to Afghanistan next week.
Peterson said he couldn't confirm Sexton's mental state because it "hasn't been tested."
In an AP report, Sexton's father, Jeffrey Sexton said neither he nor his wife noticed any signs of stress during the soldier's visit home.
But Jeffrey Sexton said the shooting wasn't an accident. Sexton's brothers said he told a friend to duck down before the shooting. When the friend refused, Sexton shoved the friend's head down and fired the gun, according to the AP article.
In the same article, First Sgt. Steven Bishop from the Indiana National Guard said Sexton was a great kid who put others first.
"He was always smiling - always joking," Bishop said.
