Welcome to Deafpager! OR http://www.deafpager.com/support/rumors.html
Grant, can you forward this to *********** for me? It's for
informational purposes only. There's a lot of false rumor going around
the community about a new Sidekick 3 and I want to clear it up.
-----Original Message-----
Hello everyone,
Have you received a forwarded email with a picture of a very cool
looking device which the email claims to be a Sidekick 3? I've gotten
plenty of these the last few days. At first, I thought this was a
Sidekick 3 as well. So I did some research and here's what I figured
out. Last week, it was announced that a new Microsoft PDA phone would be released for T-Mobile Germany this summer. It's style resembles that of the Sidekick. Just so there's no confusion, this is definitely not the
T-Mobile Sidekick 3 (or any Sidekick device). This is the MDA IV. MDA
is a product lineup of Microsoft smart phones sold in Europe. At this
time, there is no word of a Sidekick 3 release. My guess is the earliest we would see a new Sidekick would be early 2006. T-Mobile USA will not carry the MDA IV. It's network standards are designed with European technology in mind. It's possible a similar version could be designed for us. If it does I will be sure to publish an update. I believe it was a news article written in the United Kingdom that sparked much of the confusion. The link for the article is below. Notice how the title of the article might imply the device was a 'Sidekick 3.' I think I might write a letter to the editor :)

T-Mobile unveils Sidekick-styled 3G device
By Tony Smith
Published Thursday 3rd February 2005 12:08 GMT
T-Mobile's German wing today launched the latest in the company's own-brand MDA handset family, the 3G-enabled MDA IV "mini laptop".

With a design that clearly owes much to Motorola's MPx smart phone and Danger's Hiptop communicator - which T-Mobile offers in the US as the Sidekick - the MDA IV sports a QWERTY keyboard located below a 640 x 480 display that not only folds up and away from the keyboard clamshell-style, but also rotates to allow the unit to be used tablet-fashion like a PDA.Inside the unit is a 520MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor, we understand, running Windows Mobile software, though at this stage the version remains unclear. It may be Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, or possibly its successor, T-Mobile said. Nor is it certain who's building the MDA IV for T-Mobile, but Taiwan's HTC remains the most likely candidate. It has designed and produced all of T-Mobile's MDA line-up to date. The design certainly has an HTC feel about it. If it is HTC, then the MDA IV is likely to appear on other networks, too, such as O2, Vodafone and Orange, all of which have taken a number of HTC's earlier Windows Mobile devices and applied their own branding. The unit sports two cameras, and come equipped with a tri-band GSM/GPRS radio. Like the MDA III, the new model features Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. There's USB for wired connections to a PC. T-Mobile also said it would offer a push email service with the unit. The MDA IV is set to ship this coming summer. ®

1. Will this new T-Mobile model, MDA IV, be sold in the USA?
NO! T-Mobile has announced the MDA IV for the European market this summer. There is no information on when the MDA IV will be available in the US market - it is highly doubtful it will be this year.
2. What is the expected price?

T-Mobile Germany did not set the price yet. We believe that it would cost about US $500 to $600.
3. Why will they not sell it in the USA yet?

The MDA IV is designed to work with European network technology in mind. US wireless networks are older than Europe's, and this probably is one reason the MDA IV is not going to be available in the US yet. The MDA IV can use GSM/GPRS and UTMS (3G) which is very fast. (It can use Bluetooth and WiFi as well.)
4. Will MDA IV replace the Sidekick II?

No, it is developed by a different company, HTC. It also runs a different OS, Windows Mobile. The Sidekick is made by Danger and the Sidekicks run the Danger OS. We are making an educated guess that we may be hearing about the new Sidekick sometime in the Spring of 2006, probably not sooner.
4. Where I can read more information about the MDA IV?

Thanks so much for this information. I heard, it was hoax in the emails. I got a message yesterday, it will be out in year of 2006.

I will get Sidekick 2 in June because of my end of contactor.

Everyone, I found out that The MDA IV is designed by Microsoft's production.. Did you know that??

It appears that the only thing Microsoft on there is the PocketPC operating system (like Windows). Like Mac OS or Palm OS or Blackberry OS. Is that what you're referring to?

Good question... You certainly doubt me right now.. Ha ha.. I mean MDA IV designed by MS. T-mobile feature MDA IV for MS.. Not winodws system... Once you doubt me right now.. I will check it online again.. thank you... :)

According to one news article, T-Mobile hasn't stated who the manufacturer is, though the writer believes it will be HTC.

Linked news article:
http://www.mobilegazette.com/t-mobile-mda-iv-preview.htm

HTC:
http://www.htc.com.tw/

HTC is a Taiwanese company. They develop solutions that include mobile Windows OS. They are not Microsoft themselves, but they apparently are a very respected Microsoft OS solution provider.

We don't know if HTC is actually making them, but the article believes that it will be LIKELY to be HTC. The MDA III was made by HTC (Blue Angel).

Hi.. I have talked with Danager Co. and Hiptop Co. they said those are NOT sidekick III  . those are HOAX.

Those pictures are different named but yes exist products as NOT sidekick 3.
Such it is MDA 4 and other names. that will be works for any publics and deaf.

Thanks Deaf258 for the information. RAMs PC Doctor, interesting.. Glad that you found out the accurately information for us. :)

Boy, this rumor is still going around. A guy told me yesterday that he read an article about this same thing. He also mentioned that it was made by Microsoft and was in Europe at the time. He obviously didn't catch his own statement.

I did chat with a few folks today at deafnation expo booth setup. They know of a new product that will be an elevation from SK II to be offered to the deaf communities 'real soon'. Theyre being mum on the exact product info.

Richard, help me reconcile this:

1) You're the only one with this info, yet you say:
2) They're talking all about it at DeafNation.

You're contradicting yourself.

Either stop spreading these rumors or tell us who you talked with so that we in the cellular industry can verify that you're telling the truth.

Right now, your credibility isn't there, you're just guilty of spreading more rumors to the community you say you have some trust issues with.
