Purple thing hanging on trees near highways or somewhere.. what's that?

They have them at Lake Harriet, among other places. I go there walking pretty often.
Your icon would attrach the ash borers! :P
 
We don't have ash trees here which is why I never seen those before.

We only have cottonwood, red alder, madrona, few oak spieces, douglas fir, red cedar and many other conifers and dediclous trees.
 
Yesterday when I rode city bus through Southside Minneapolis, I saw those purple stuff hanging on trees for first time. Now I know why.
