Newbies: Quick FAQs

Wirelessly posted

Hi my name is marie and i have been deaf since birth. The doctors tried to "fix" my hearing but it has gotten worse in the last month or so. I live in the united states, in spokane, washington, i was told about the deaf culture but my mother wanted me to "hear" other things in a "normal" school instead of a deaf school. We in Washington state have one deaf school, we need another deaf school here in eastern washington. My mother is also deaf from back in the old days the doctors werent too careful about cleaning the ears and scratched her eardrum with the cleaning tool. I can sign in both Asl and SEE, i sometimes even dream in sign language. I am 29 years old and am getting new HAs and possibly a C.I., i cant wait to get either of those. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in my left ear. Id very much like to get in touch with deaf people who have the old TTY machines or in touch with a person who uses a videophone. Can this be possible for me to get a TTY directory? If so, where?

Thank you very very much,
Marie from spokane Wa

My Skype is billie2285, I hope to make some good friends here :) I'm excited!

Hello from a newbie

A close friend of mine asked me to look into developing some practical Android phone applications to help the community. Although I've dealt with some serious difficulties with myself and my wife, hearing is not one.

My request is that people please give me feedback on what will be of honest usefulness to the community. I am willing to consider any that has a general application.

Information on TTY/TDD captioning, 911, or other communication problems will be greatly helpful.

Thank you.
Ray

A little bit about me

I too where HA both ears the best kind for one who's hearing is profound is higher frequencies Hearing aids those newer aids that are digital do not work for profound hearing loss I have 95% loss in both ears and wear aids that too are not the best for me I have tried on the digital aids they make me feel like I am hearing in tunnel which gave me headaches trying to hear so I can only use those aid for profound hearing loss and sorry to say those types of aids are not invisible I think your parents are denying the fact your are HOH My mother in fact accepted my hearing loss when I was 6 yrs old refused to accept what the Doctors first told her I had organic brain disorder so she took me to see an specialist who then gave me an veritable tests including IQ then after those tests done hearing test found nothing related to organic brain disorder MY parents were happy to find out that I was smart and only thing wrong with me was my hearing...
As for hearing aids mother was told would not work she refused to accept that by the time I was 10 got my first hearing aid I got to tell you the first time I ever heard the dog barking in the background and hearing the birds sing for the first time I was so happy I cried even my parents at that time I also was in reg schools in special classes I never knew sigh language until met my 2nd Husband who taught me I learned very quickly with 9 months I know every sign possible I had missed out a lot in my younger years was somewhat behind in education my peers used to tease me during middle school We my family was in the Air Force so we got to travel the world so to speak I think anyone who learns the ASL will enjoy helping those who either HOH or deaf My oldest Daughter learns more each time and wants to become interpintor sp? sorry I lost my Husband to cancer over 2 years ago we were divorced but still friends 6 yrs before that Lost my 3rd husband to Liver cancer from Drinking heavy we were separated at the time of his death both of my Girls lost their fathers lets just say I had an rough few years dealing with all
But I am on this site for the first time as I miss having friends I myself became disabled while driving to work one night Sept 19 2001 8 days after the 9/11 lost my career Nursing due to perm damage to my neck as it was fused over 2 yrs after the wreck I have the most wonderful man in my life who is now learning ASL he knows someday I too will become deaf as my hearing is getting worse due to nerve damage We been together going on 15 yrs he has patients and wants to learn I thought it would be good to search the net to start locating meetings in my area and also find new friends for myself I am into reptiles and other pets dogs cats etc currently own an Juvie Bearded Dragon Male named Draco got him in Jan 16th of this year for my B-day gift at that time he was only 5 inchs from head to tail now he is 10.5 inchs so that makes him around 4.5 months old the other reptiles I own is 1 Gulf Box turtle and 2 Eastern Box turtles and Hermit crab (land) 2 mother and daughter Chihuahua's mom is 7lbs daughter is 2.5lbs and service dog that I trained and certified with my state as my service animal who is now turning 10 this year starting to show his age he is an English Staffordshire Bull terrier wonderful dog does all I need him to do I have retired him the Mother dog Ninia is now my service animal in training as she does have an mouth on her when she needs to sound off both girls do not bark on reg basics just mom the tiny girls name is Pequinia Princesa means Tiny Princess in Spanish we call her Cessa for short or Me2 when she sees her mom get loving from us she will start standing up waving her front legs like what about me 2 so we call her that sometimes. since they are Chi's I named them Spanish names I do not speak the language well my dogs knows some ASL like sit or lay or hush and big NO signing when they start to bark so they are well behaved since I do hear some we have neighbors that keeps their dog out all day He Barks all the time which in turn drives my guy nuts oh well we cant chose our neighbors besides they are very nice people.....
Now I have told you an little bit about myself Care to tell us a little bit about yourself  Hope to hear from some New friends take care until we chat more

New to this. HOH for most of my life and have adjusted fairly well. When you do not understand what others are saying, how do you get them to understand that you do not understand them?

I always just ask if they'd talk a little slower and face me. It tends to work. When they don't get it the first time, I wave at them, look them square in the eye and say, "I need to read your lips." If I still can't catch on to what they said, I tell them what I know they said and ask them to repeat whatever it was I missed. That tends to do the trick.
I hope that helps?

guess I should have done this first

:wave:I have been on and off the site a good bit of the day and figured I should do the intro. I'm HOH, although I am still able to hear my biggest problem comes from communication.. I hear some noise and know that someone is talking I am unable to distinguish most spoken words if someone isn't facing me so I can partial lip read while they are talking. I am trying to learn ASL so that I can start incorporating it might I add learning to Sign at 41...not that easy. I guess that really covers it.

I'm 43 and hoh though I don't know if I was born that way or not. Born very premature/low birth weight, doc.'s told my folks I was missing inner ear bones, so the story goes.
Spoke very late and was in Special Ed for speech and language.

Many things actually used to be too loud when I was in college and for some time after until went to hub's audiology office some years back and had hearing test showing loss, after I found I wasn't able to hear my husband from a certain distance when previously i could have.

hubby oral deaf, born to 15 yr. old <Rubella> mainstreamed

I am a very visual learner/person. I sign a bit and learned about the Deaf community when I was in college and worked part-time with Deaf students and staff in a Summer Recreational program.

I am new and learning

My name is Susan Hayward. I have always wanted to learn ASL since I was a little girl. I think it is a beautiful language, but learning it is something else. I am sticking to it and really enjoy it. I have a question and need help. the word "until" in reference to "won't get more until those are gone. Is "until" used as a verb or a modifier or do you just drop it.
