Hello,

For purposes of anonymity, my name is Huscurian, a HOH person from Corpus Christi, TX. I classify myself as HOH, despite my profound deafness, by the classification that deaf culture placed on me. Such strict standards of deaf culture had to be adhered to to prevent any confusion among other deafs.

I am not an avid ASL user, is a oral-speaking, lip-reading person who has been in a mainstream environment, culturally hearing, and have lived among the hearing people very much my entire life. A small indulgence of seeing, hanging out with deaf people have been undertaken, but since then, I have remained largely in the hearing world.

I may sound arrogant, prickly, or high-minded; I'm not because I introduce myself as I am. Otherwise, I'm showing different shades of Huscurian. I signed up to AllDeaf.com not because of the community that was set up here but because I seek answers to some of my burning questions. Questions that may be answered on different viewpoints without partiality, without favoritism. I will accept both the view of hearing people as I will accept the view of deaf people when it comes to my question but largely my opinion is formed based on my assessment of the data.'

I'm Huscurian and I hope my questions can be answered.

Hello Bottesini,

My initial questions have to do with cochlear implants. I had an audiological evaluation done. The results were suprisingly staggering and tremendously negative in its impact. The audiological specialist, who conducted the tests, suggested that I look into cochlear implants.

Currently, I am assessing the risks of using cochlear implants later in life. I dream so big, want to achieve all of my dreams, and do so much more in my life but if cochlear implants are the bane of my dreams then it would be a huge problem with me. It would literally feel like I need to rebel strongly against the supreme authority here on earth.

What are the pros and cons of using cochlear implants? Have any person with cochlear implants been able to take up jobs in a high-risk environment: i.e. racing, police, SWAT, military, or highly auditory such as politician, businessman, etc.? Does the long-term investment of cochlear implants prove it's worthy rather than the short-term?

What are the risks of taking it versus the risks of not taking it, in a compact view of cochlear use? If statistically possible, what are the numbers of success rates versus the non-success rates?

These are the questions I have now to ask and I hope that you, and other members, are welcome to answer. :)

No strict standards here. If you're nice and stick around, you can learn the secret handshake.

Hi Huscarian, and welcome. There are all shades of deaf, Deaf, and HOH around here. I'm HOH also, with a severe loss, have worn hearing aids for 30 years now.

Lots of good information here on types of aids, CIs, other technology you might want. Lots of spirited debates on Deaf culture, parenting, other topics. Do hang around, I'm looking forward to seeing what you have to say.

I have about two posts that I wrote but are soon to be moderated by the administrator(s) of the forum. I will let the posts appear as soon as it can but I don't know how long it'll be before my two posts appears so I'll wait.

EDIT: Are any of the AllDeaf Administrators censoring any posts because so far, I have not seen any of my posts appear that I wrote around two or three hours ago?

Secretblend, buy me some beer and I'll show you.

They will show up eventually. The admins look at the first few posts from a new poster to make sure the person is legit, that it's not spam, etc. Since the admins actually have a life besides hanging around AD, if you can believe it, sometimes it takes a little time.

No worries, they'll show up eventually.

Welcome!

Oh and may i add that I am having trouble PM'ing you! Do you have settings on yoru profile prohibiting PM's?

Good day,

Huscurian, What do you think a Cochlear Implant will prevent you from doing?

Hello Polly,

No, I have absolutely received one PM from you. :) However, I don't think the admins here at AllDeaf.com has enabled my PM system just yet.

If you are interested in contacting me, try my email address: h.coleman27@rocketmail.com to get around the hurdle of the PM system if you're interested.

Huscurian, What do you think a Cochlear Implant will prevent you from doing?

I have no idea, Cheetah. I'm the kind of person who has a high-risk zero tolerance. I would invest in a high-risk venture if I had to but only if I'm prepared for the consequences it brings to me.

What I've heard from some other deaf people, not members here on AllDeaf.com, who have been persistent in telling me that cochlear implants are not the excellent route to go; that there are a wide variety of reasons. I'm assuming that while they're vehement about me not taking this implants, the technology they may be talking about are years ago.

I have not heard one bit about how excellent a piece of technology this is, what it entails, how it helped, etc. I tried getting the addresses off of people who lived in my town so I could visit and inquire about their experiences with the cochlear implants. There were no phone numbers for one lady in Austin, another in another town.

All I see is the cochlear implants people advertising how great it is. I just haven't seen anyone who has been successful enough who could talk with me about it, tell me how great it is, what are the pros/cons, etc. How has his life been after taking it?

This is very important because I cannot take a high risk unless I've judged the pros/cons and am quite duly prepared to deal with it.
