My Hubby has landed a new and better job position,
and while it keeps him away during the week, (thank
you internet! that we can easily stay in contact) and
he is home on weekends, it is better pay and less
time driving and the drive is easier. But the exciting
part is that one of his coworkers is deaf and has
two kids the same age as mine! Yay! We plan to
go there and visit on some weekends for snow
trips instead of him comming home. So we are
looking forward to meeting this family. The
daughter is not deaf but trying to learn ASL to
communicate with her dad. Maybe a pal for my
daughter?! This deaf man was very surprised when
my hubby signed, "Hi How are you?" So naturally
he starts to sign like greased lightning and my
hubby says, "WAIT, please slow for me!" They
both laugh at that. So after that today my
hub says he came over to where my hub works
and chatted together for about 15 mins during
break. The guys across the table were very
interested that my husband knew sign language.
(My hubby learned SEE because he had a Deaf friend
and she taught him so he could communicate with
his Deaf cousin but don't know why she chose SEE
because she uses ASL herself) Any way I am
excited to make some new deaf friends. (that I
might actually get to spend some time with)

That's great, congrats to your hubby. :)

My husband has been a General Contractor for 20 years. He grew
up in the building trades with 7 Uncles who each did some type
of contracting work. (One painted, one sheet rocked, one did
foundations, etc) He worked for them all. The last few years
he has been working for the Park Service and this new Job is at
Mt Rainer. (Befor he worked at Crater Lake). He does everything
there from routine building maintenance to building entirely new
buildings. He is a very talented man. He designed a radiant heat
system for our own home that works off our wood stove. Plastic
pipes run under the tile floor and the wood stove heats water
in tanks behind the wood stove. That water runs through the
tubes, resulting in warm tiles floors. Very cozy, very cheap!
I love my home! He built it to have a passive solar design as well.
Any way the new people where he works seem really nice and
he will be getting a little more money too. Which is allways welcome
when you are feeding a family of 7!

Interesting. We heated all our homes in Montana with wood that we cut and hauled home ourselves. There's nothing quite so satisfying as having several cords stacked up before leaves fall.

Rooms where boxes of honey-ladened combs are kept before processing need to be as hot as sweat-lodges. I lived at an apiary where water pipes in the cement floor was the only heat. Ha ha ha, you could never go barefooted. Always had to wear boots or thick-soled slippers.

Sorry your hubby has to be gone. Been there; done that. Even the next state is too far away.

Radiant heat system?!?! I would love to have one here ! But, Im in Texas... not need it! lol....

Just wondering, is it helping ? for heat ? ?:ugh3:

It has its drawbacks, but I am very used to it. My dad was in the Navy
and sometimes we didn't see him for 9 months at a time.

I am going to buy two web cams for our computers next payday
and try to get a computer to computer video system set up.
That way the kids could see daddy every night and say good night.
On weekends when he can't be home we do a family Bible study
together around the table with the speaker phone on. So with a
web cam we could do some of the kids school work together. (My
hub loves History and Math, so he usually does that with the kidlets)
I do art, language, science, and social studies. And whatever else
I get interested in. It can be stressful but not nearly as stressful as
the "Feast or Famine" life of a self employed general contractor! I
love him getting a steady paycheck!

That's awesome, tell him Congratulations!!!

Best wishes to your family on your hubby's new endeavor. :)

Of all the heating systems I've been exposed to radiant
heat is the one I like best. It is a system where the heat
"radiates" from the floor and rises upward. When I worked
on helicopters, in the Army I was stationed in Alaska and
we had that type of heat system in the aircraft hangers.
When you had to open the huge bay doors all the heat
would rush out. But as soon as they were closed the heat
would start to rise off the floor and soon the whole giant
hanger was warm again. Many of these systems are run
by propane or natural gas, some are electric. (all need
a little electric to run the small water pump that circulates
the water). As soon as we can we are going to change
the plumbing around and run the preheated water into
our propane hot water tank. The savings should be
considerable because the water will already be at about
75 or 80 degrees. The plastic pipes are installed before
the concrete is poured, then the concrete hardens over
the pipes. It is really and effiecent and cost effective system.

Congrats! your hubby have new job and how awesome you gained new friendship with new deaf friends :)

I did have a private pilot license but lost it due to not being able to pass the physical anymore. My dad was military and learned how to fly helicopters and fixed wings and when I was growing up he had his own flight school so I got to teach some of the ground school classes for him after I turned 16. The doctor says that about one third of my hearing loss is due to all those years around planes and choppers. I wouldn't trade it for the world though cause it was time with my dad and we were so happy. Oh and I can't dive either I have a phobia of water, if I can't see the bottom or what is in the water then I ain't gettin in it. I would love to chat with you more!
