My name is Lexie and I'm hearing... I'm learning ASL from a book,
flash cards, and internet free classes. My fascination
started when I was in kindergarten, but I wouldn't
understand it was ASL for many more years. In a music
class it would be learning to sign L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole.
That would stick with me for years to come. Slowly
I'm learning little by little. The other day I would realize
I'm absorbing more than I thought between what I'm learning
on my own and from the show Switched At Birth. I went with
my parents to see some relatives and someone signed one
word as we passed. From my limited knowledge I figured out
enough to tell my dad and he figured out that our blinker was
still on well after we had changed lanes. It might seems small,
but it means a lot to me. I feel like I am progressing even if it
feels like a slow go of it. This language has been this beautiful
expression, and I want to be able to learn to become fluent.
There is true beauty of the soul and spirit; that is what I see in ASL.
