Hey all,

My name is Rachel and I live in Fort Collins, CO. I'm looking for deaf community in Fort Collins, Longmont, Loveland area.

I'm hearing, partially proficient ASL, looking for community for me and my sister who is deaf.

check out coloradodeaf.com, there are things posted there. If you are up for a bit of a drive, every thurs in superior there is a meetup at old chicago... also first tuesday of every month in boulder there is a meetup there too. I'm in Denver, work in boulder. I know PFH could probably give you more info. How old are you guys?

getting connected

We are 24. Coloradodeaf.com is compromised right now and not really working. When I went to the link, it was selling viagra...

Angela (my sister) works in Denver GoodWill and lives in Longmont with my older sister who's an ASL terp but is looking for another place to live since my older sister is getting married.

I think I've been to the Tuesday night in Boulder once...I didn't know about the meetup in Superior. I think we could make that a priority. Who cares about gas and time if it gets us into community. :ty:

Rachel

Welcome. I assume you learned ASL to communicate with your sister? That's great. I am surprised at how many hearing family members of deaf siblings and children don't learn sign.

I only wish I knew more. My sister has many autistic tendencies and medical complications, and she did not communicate very well until a few years ago. My mother did her best to incorporate sign language in our daily lives. We did not live around any who could help us grow as a family in our ASL abilities.

My older sister is the most awesome advocate I'll ever know. She is the one who has gotten an Associates degree in ASL interpreting, assimilated Deaf Culture, and helped my twin sister in her identity and communication as Deaf. My twin sister is now trying to become independent and it will be a long, hard, yet worthwhile endeavor for both her and her family. I hope and pray that someday soon I can see my sister an integral part of a community which accepts her, with a niche and purpose in live, fully self sustained and content.

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. I am glad that you have been trying to help your twin sister to get the needs as a Deaf person, even if she had several complications. Accommodations is important to her to get what she needs to communicate with you and your other sister (Terp) to help her feel comfortable. I applauded you and your interpreter sister to make things a little bit easier for her. :applause: :h5:

I hope you enjoy reading and posting all the threads here. See you around here.
