Facebook

I'm on Facebook as well. I found it a great way to keep up with my friends from high school and college, as well as other family and friends, whether I see them often or not. Been on there for about a year now. I've also found some of the games addicting, too.

I've said that over time and again that Facebook is a place to be at but, today, I ever have more reason to say this because what happened today really got to me.

I am in awe because my oldest cousin (she's my uncle's daughter) disappeared since 1989. Never heard or seen her ever since. When we were kids, we were really close and played a lot of times together. I was accepting the fact that I'd never hear or see her again, and to go on with my life. And then, today, she finds me on Facebook. Fast forward, 22 years later, we reconnect. So awesome to be able to reconnect with her!! :aw:

We've got a lot to catch up to do! :)

OMGosh!! That is so awesome!! What a wonderful thing to experien ce... :D

I am member facebook, i have protect safe my account !

I am on Facebook all the time! I have connected with cousins and other family members that I never get to see, so that's cool! I do play a few of the games (like Cafe World, and 2 treasure digging games). It helps me keep up with what my kids are doing because we're 'friends' on Facebook so I see their posts and what their friends post to them. I am part of quite a few ASL/Sign Language/Deaf, etc pages as well.

Don't have time for Twitter... it just didn't grab me. lol

I am addicting to Facebook :D

really lots of member is great popular is facebook is great. I am addiction friends :D I wish be face by face new friends, I like it.

I'm totally happy having nothing to do with online social networks  I neither subscribe to facebook or twitter, because it is full of trivia mostly. It probably suits deaf because they are isolated, but whether this enhances personal interaction...... or communication, I think that still demands face to face. Then we find it usually fails. As a knowledge of other people, perhaps... and assuming you are good at English and reading and sending text messages. Sadly it fails with sign language still.

I still think 400 million people have it wrong, but don't quote me lol........ It's too well know Facebook is intrusive encourages stalkers, and definitely NOT safe ! I think the twitters just do it to say they have a celeb logged in or something, hardly realising these celebs are just plugging themselves ! Stephen Fry in the UK will talk to anyone... he has 3 people answering for him most of the time... Brilliant self-publicist, but a friend ? I don't think so !

If you are totally happy with no online social networks, why have you said 256 thing here?? :hmm:

I will admit that I play the mass collective of farmville, petville, scrabble and zooworld on facebook along with keeping up with my friends... but can't seem to make heads or tales of alldeaf on there..... I much prefer this site. I do have membership to a local (as in my hometown) autism group for my daughters friends and teachers. But have my security set up to keep out most.... since the viral loads going through facebook now amazes me! That and I share a lot of pictures of my family with friends and I want to keep her protected. But the site seems to insist that personal protection is a thing of the past and you really have to keep up on those updates to keep any information private! I am conviced it really isn't still....... and struggle with deleting it off and on. But as for networking with my world wide friends... I haven't found another method to top it.

Unfortunately, I must conjure that this is a dying breed of the past, it won't last except for a small group that is bonded for the same reasons. :(

The future is social networking and I can only see it going that way. The world is shifted towards faster, quicker communications rather than old fashioned ideology.

Kids these days are picking up quicker than the last generation of kids. There's something new each time.

There may be more stalkers due to the introduction of these networking sites, but it doesn't change the fact that they may have had it in them before the sites existed. Let's not also forget that the cyberpolicing is growing these days. Police are using social networking to catch and track the location of criminals.

I am no techno-luddite, I'm well aware of how it is used, I Just think just because its a trend doesn't make it as you say. Faster/quicker, yes I'm into all that, but as a TOOL which is all I see these things as being to various degrees, I do not buy the 'networking' thing in campaigning and profile awareness mode, it's a 'social' tool where trivia is 98% of the output, without being critical reading some responses by users seems to prove the point.

FB and Twitter COULD be used as an effective tool for deaf advancement but as yet I don't see it doing that, there are few if any campaigns for equality being generated, certainly NOT with twitter which is in my view a complete and utter waste of time, FB has possibilities, but I rather fear joe public has been seduced by the 'trend' and is not using it for the common good, just think WHAT deaf could achieve IF they could utilise facebook and its 400 million drones to back them up... All I see is exchanges about celebs, TV programs, whatever, I suppose it depends on WHAT you want out of a social network, even making 100s of 'friends' doesn't mean you can count on them backing deaf equality, soon as you mention politics/rights, social network contributors tend to turn off. It's about keeping percpective and understanding what these things really are.

They aren't a replacement or greater force for good, UNLESS used for that, and it isn't. I'd challenge it is a tool of use at present. I doubt many can name any real law change or advance in equality and rights that is down to social networking since it started. Talk is cheap, talk is fast, and trend is NOW, but what are they talking ABOUT ? We should use computers as tools, not let them tell us how best to socialise, which in deaf terms is only real face to face..
