It is a free game. You can buy gold to speed things up (expansions, evolutions, eggs hatching etc.) but if you're patient you don't need to buy anything.
It might be... It's a similar concept to FarmVille where you have neighbors, plant food etc. It requires Internet connection to play. I downloaded it at the App Store.
