Do we have a challenge ahead of us to avoid becoming Hearing?

You do seem younger that DeafCaroline and I. From what I have seen on AD here and from other d/Deafies whom I have met in person, those of us, who are of our age group, were raised orally. It was a trend of society back in the 70s especially when hearing aids were first made easily accessible, for the medical profession to 'experiment' with this new 'miracle'.

We were the 'guinea pigs'. There was a subtle 'brainwashing' of audism. It was taught, much like racism is taught. We were/are the victims of that.

Many of our parents are not to blame however, as was with my parents, they were not informed of other options. They honestly thought they were doing it in our best interests, because that is what they were told.

This poster is still an adolescent in high school. I'm sure his perspective will change with a bit of life experience.

Yes, I am only 17 years old, I imagine things are much more different now? 20 years after the 70's. I don't think the atrocities you went through, happen really nowadays.

Yes, they are continuing to happen. You will see that once you get out into the real world.

Really!!! how do you know deaf relatives mention? Nazi elimination group I am puzzled it!

nothing to be puzzled about, Nazi ideology was to eliminate any body who is not white, blue eyes, blond (hitler wasnt blond!- wierd) perfect health, perfect body, no blind, no deaf, no wheelchair users, no religion(esp Jews - cuz they were rich and sneaky with businesses which is why Hitler hated them - it waspoliticial but he gone too way too far, = mass murdering was his 'solution'
If Nazi won WW2, you and I would never be alive , at birth they check babies then kill whoever is not 'right'..like if blind or deaf , those deaf babies will be killed to death immediately. No Joke, its very sick.

Absolutely. Some days, it seems to be in short supply.

...and...i blame it on extreme 'liberalism' the extreme right wing economic politics/policy. because their emphasis is on maximum profit by all means, get rid of imperfect workers to save $$ and max out effiecency...

Speaking of glittering CIs, I plan to get stickers for my upgrade. I've had it for a while just never got around to getting stickers for them.
Stickers? What are they? I know what stickers are. But I'm not sure how it's in relations to the CI. You mean to put the stickers on the CI or something?

Er, extreme right wing is ultraconservative. Left wing is liberal.

I think that Grummer is referring to people who promote a ruthless form of capitalism.
Social Darwinism. Basically the Ayn Raynd crowd. In current politics, they are called the Chicago School economists.

Oh, he's talking about the current flavor of libertarianism? That makes more sense, I was wondering where "liberal" came from.

That may be it. I'll let him speak for himself, though.

no, left wing is more socialist right wing is more individualist

yes, current flavor of libertarianism is extreme right wing. If you read up the British ways of politics talk you'd see... or rather from feilds of sociology...loosely related...

American politics doesnt range widely enough, it is because it IS the right-wing country in itself, that is; the ranges are narrowed down to how to redistribute capital wealth but in a more narrow scope of whos to be responsible if somebody has to pay, rather than how the taxes pays for...

yes something like that, im not familar with american politics because i dont live there...but also i can see in future the socialism is slowly slowly making a return albeit some cryouts saying its hurting economy (sic) but in reality its only hurtng pockets of rich doctors who have shares in the hospital ownership...but grant its more complicated than that, theres insurance, and insurance has become a mainstay in american economy, which is why its so difficult to revert back to have a little bit of 'safety nets' aka the leeway to incorporate some socialist aspect in public health...but let's move back on topic shall we?

Here's another attempt to get back to the main point of the thread...

I liked what Grummer wrote near the beginning about not being stupid. When we pretend to be Hearing, we are being stupid in that we're not being true to ourselves, and the result is emotional damage. So my question is "How can we be intelligent - mentally, emotionally & socially?"

Personally, I think developing compassion is an important part of the answer. Compassion to ourselves, and compassion to others - especially if they are "different" from yourself. Showing compassion demonstrates strength. I'm not talking about a weak love than gets trod down, but rather a strong love that protects the weak and challenges the dominant. Plus challenges the powerful in an emotionally intelligent way. If the only thing hearing people see are deaf people moaning, bickering and being negative, then there's no attraction for them to change and accommodate us. I'm thinking of how Martin Luther King courageously challenged a racist society using non-violent methods.

Bump for justice and don't-wanna-read-38-pages-then-post-my-reply (Not now)! Great topic and good example of Martin Luther King.

One of the first selling points of CI was that the medical establishment was told, by the manufacturers, that CI was more cost effective to society because CI users would not require any form of accommodation. That has been proven to be completely false. Still some hang onto the "cost effective" fallacy.
