Hello everyone.

My name is Desiree, I live in Ontario Canada. I am 28 years old, and have been deaf since birth. I wear one hearing aid in my left ear, and I barely sqeak into being able to understand speech. My right ear has practically no usable hearing. I was given speech therapy when I was a baby

Unfortunately, I was born in an era when specialists were pushing for oralism, so I was never given ASL lessons. What didn't help was that my parents were of the attitude that once I had my hearing aid, I was cured. Yeah, right.

However, in the last few months, I have been taking ASL classes, and am soaking it up like a sponge. I am loving it so much! I have always wanted to learn ASL, and had in fact picked up quite a few signs over the years. I have known the manual alphabet since I was about nine or ten.

Although I am mostly deaf, I have a love for music and musical instruments. I am able to hear just enough to enjoy classical, jazz, some rock, folk, celtic, bagpipes. I don't play, but I love musical instruments such as piano, drums, violin, cello, trumpet.

I have a degree as a Library Technician. As you probably have guessed by my name, I love reading and books. I could browse a library for days, never mind hours. I like reading historical fiction, some fantasy, drama, select horror. My non fiction reads include topics like autobiographies, animals, some medicine, paranormal, and of course history. I like reading about Scotland, as I am part Scottish and very proud of it.

Movies are another thing I enjoy immensly. I like medical dramas, documentaries, dramas, select comedy, and of course historical dramas. I have been able to enjoy them all the more thanks to my discovery of closed captioning.

I grew up in the country with many animal companions, so I have developed a love and appreciation for animals and nature. I've had dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs. My younger sister even had a pet frog at one point! I once had a whole tank of turtles, which I find very interesting creatures.

I hope to get to know some nice people on here!

Hello Desiree

Wow, great introduction. I took up ASL in high school and I am now currently taking it up in college. I am going into the interpreting program. I have been looking for a deaf/HOH friend. If you would like to be friends, email me at smitdl47@students.fscj.edu

Hope to hear from you soon :) Take care and nice to meet you :)

Welcome. One of my daughters is taking some library science classes in college. She thinks that might be the direction she wants to go.

Thanks everyone for your warm welcomes! This sounds like a very friendly community. I can't wait to join in on some interesting discussions with you guys.

That's awesome. What courses is she taking? Is she enjoying it?

Um, blush, I don't know exactly what courses she is taking, but I know the library science class is her favorite. She just started- this was her first semester at college after being totally homeschooled all her life.

She started volunteering at our local library when she was 13. Then she got a job working there part time, and she's still doing that. She's 21.

Four of our six daughters have either volunteered or worked at our local library. I love your user name- I am kind of crazy about books.
We have around ten thousand of them.

Hello and welcome :D

I am not deaf, I'm hoh rather (deaf on right, mild loss in left) and kinda had the same experience when I was going up as far as hearing aids, I got my first HA when I was in 5th grade and people were wondering why I was still having trouble because apparently it was supposed to fix my hearing, heh.

I am also learning ASL as well and I love it :)

Nice to meet you -waves-
