very little of this is over the mainstream press, for obvious reasons. a very quick blurb was on cbc, but soon dropped for more important things in life, like the color of truedeus tie, and such..cnn was too too busy fawning over the grand speeches last night to worry to much about this...with more ot come

so here it is..

A priest has been killed in an attack by two armed men at his church near Rouen in northern France, police and French media have said.

The armed men entered the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during mass, taking the priest, two nuns and several churchgoers hostage, reports said.

French TV said shots had been heard after police arrived at the scene. Both hostage-takers are now dead.

The area has been cordoned off and police have told people to stay away.

At least one person is receiving medical treatment for injuries.

There was no immediate indication of the identity or motive of the hostage-takers, but France has been on high alert since the Bastille Day attack in Nice earlier this month, when an attacker ploughed a lorry into celebrating crowds, killing more than 80 people.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Paris says the French government has been under huge pressure to prevent further attacks.

President Francois Hollande and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve are on their way to Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray to be briefed by police.

Priest killed with blade after being held hostage in France church - local media

French police "neutralised" two men armed with blades who had taken several people hostage in a church in northern France on Tuesday.

A police source said that one of the hostages had been killed with a blade in the attack which took place in the Normandy town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, south of Rouen.

French media reported the attackers cut the throat of the priest.

French President Francois Hollande was on his way to the site of the attack.

It was not immediately clear if the assailants were killed or taken alive in the police operation that ended the assault.

Live TV images showed police had blocked off the roads around the church and paramedics were seen pulling stretchers out of ambulances.

The hostages included a priest, two nuns and two worshippers according to BFM TV.

The attack is the latest in a string of deadly assaults in Europe.

In France, the Normandy attack comes 12 days after a 31-year-old Tunisian killed 84 people in the French Riviera city of Nice when he ploughed his heavy goods truck into a crowd of revellers.

Islamic State claimed the attack in Nice.

im curious of the mainstream presses outrage and mass waves of condmentation if for instance this was some imam being murdered in he middle of saying the muslem what ever its called and 2 catholic crusaders showed up and lopped his head off, ala knights templars of old...

i can only imagine how little air time truedeus tie would get with the ensuing flood of outrage...

No one is safe from their attacks, even in little village churches. :(

At least the authorities didn't waste precious time waiting for hostage release (that never happens). The terrorists would have slaughtered all the church goers if they had the time.

Heart breaking . I went to catholic school all my life.

(shakes head)

hollande showed up and gave another speech and waged both index fingers today at his outrage over this..

guess that's a start.

Report: 1 attacker in Normandy, France, church previously charged with terror links and held before being freed on bail, sources say - AFP, BBC

PARIS (AFP) - One of the two attackers who stormed a church in France and slit a priest's throat on Tuesday (July 26) had been charged with terror links and held before being freed on bail, a source close to the investigation said.

The assailant, who was known to France's anti-terrorism police, tried twice to go to Syria in 2015, the source told AFP. After his release, he had to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet that allows police to locate him at all times.

He had already threatened to attack a church, according to witness testimony collected in his neighbourhood.

"We knew he wanted to go to Syria," a 60-year-old neighbour of the assailant's family, who added that he "never saw him go to the mosque" that he attended.

The attacker was detained the first time in Germany, while he was on his way to Syria, the source close to the probe said. He was not yet 18 years old at the time.

The second time, which was after he had turned 18, he went through Switzerland, and was detained in Turkey. He was sent back to Switzerland and then France.

He was charged and jailed for associating with criminals with terror links. He was then released and fitted with an electronic monitoring bracelet.

The Latest: Church Attackers Used Nuns as Human Shields

Jul 26, 2016, 4:08 PM ET

The Latest on the attack on a French church claimed by Islamic State group (all times local):

10:05 p.m.

A prosecutor says two men who attacked a Normandy church and killed a priest had fake explosives and used nuns as human shields.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said the attackers, who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group, also cried "Allahu akbar" during the attack.

One attacker was identified as 19-year-old Adel Kermiche. Molins said the other is still being identified.

He also said a minor has been detained in the investigation, who is believed to be a 16-year-old younger brother of someone wanted by police for trying to go to Syria or Iraq in 2015.

Police raids are still under way.

Church killer was a terror suspect, 19, under house arrest

In a revelation likely to fuel further questions about security failings in France, investigators revealed Tuesday afternoon that one of the two men who killed a priest in his church in northern France earlier in the day had been charged with terror links and was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet. He carried out the attack while on morning release from house arrest, they said.

The attacker has been identified as Adel Kermiche,19, a local youth whose parents flagged his radical behavior to authorities in their hometown of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, where the attack took place.

Kermiche was arrested trying to go to Syria and was put under judicial supervision upon his return, with an electronic bracelet that was deactivated for five hours a day, allowing him to leave home without surveillance, according to a police official with knowledge of the investigation.

The Paris-based Marianne magazine reported that he was jailed after his second attempt to travel to Syria and had become radicalized following the attacks in Paris in January 2015. He was allowed furlough every day from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., according to the report.

The Islamic State group said that two of its “soldiers” were responsible for the attack, in which Kermiche and another man, both armed with knives, entered the centuries-old stone St-Etienne church in the working-class town during morning mass.

Sister Danielle, a nun who was in the church at the time, said slain priest Jaques Hamel, 84, was wearing his white cloak and was at the foot of the altar when “they forced him to get on his knees and not move.”

“He tried to struggle, he tried,” she told local radio RMC of the priest aged in his 80s. “He knew what was happening.”

She said the men were speaking Arabic and shouting and had recorded the attack on video. She managed to run away and alert the police.

Both attackers were shot dead by police after an hour-long standoff. Hours later, prosecutors in Paris said one person had been detained in connection with the attack.

French President Francois Hollande said the terrorists had claimed they were acting on behalf of the Islamic State before being shot dead by police.

The IS-linked Amaq news agency, citing a “security source,” said the perpetrators were “soldiers of the Islamic State who carried out the attack in response to calls to target countries of the Crusader coalition.”

It was the fourth attack claimed by IS in Europe in two weeks, carried out by a mixed bag of assailants more or less inspired by the group from afar, some of whom are reported to have suffered mental illness.

This murky profile is creating a nightmare for security services unable to stop such attacks, although Hollande insisted the country’s anti-terrorism laws were sufficient.

The French interior ministry said that of the five people taken hostage at the church, three were released unharmed and another was in a critical condition.

A source close to the investigation said that in addition to the knives, the attackers carried an old pistol that did not work and a “fake package” that appeared as if it contained explosives.

‘All stand together’

Hours after the attack, grey clouds hung over the town, which was nearly deserted, its stores shut down. Forensic police were combing the site for clues. An AFP reporter saw police carrying out two raids and at least one person was taken into custody.

“I thought it would only be in big cities, that it couldn’t reach here,” she said.

The local imam Mohammed Karabila said he was “stunned by the death of my friend,” the priest, who was “someone who gave his life to others.

“We are dumbfounded at the mosque,” he said.

Pope Francis voiced his “pain and horror” at the “barbaric killing” of the priest.

“The whole of France and all Catholics are wounded. We will stand together,” Prime Minister Manuel Valls wrote on Twitter.

yes yes you be very wise, being the only imam in the very french town who just got its great granpapa priest's head lopped off, by one of yours, during mass no less, nuns as human shields...

this imam, if anything does have a keen sense of self preservation.
i give him that
