I agree totally with your first sentence. What I find amazing is how culturally biased people are who believe themselves to be "Objective." In other words those things you take issue with. The bolded parts. 1. You have no right to an opinion unless you have been certified to have this opinion by the appropriate authority. So shut up and only talk about what you can prove you know. Fortunately not every culture believes this. People can and often do have valid opinions about things they have not officially studied. And sometimes those opinions are of more value than those they have officially studied. 2. As for marketing and advertising -- it is what it is. Fortunately some cultures aren't so euphemistic and hypocritical. They call things as they are. The correct sign in ASL is "Pulling the nose" -- Exaggerating, blowing out of proportion and lying. 3. The parents ignorance -- Falls squarely on the parent who is in emotional turmoil, doesn't know quite how to react or what to do, and is hoping a manipulative authority on the subject (Someone with a certificate who can prove they know what they are talking about) can help them. One of the reasons Deaf people sound deaf even though they have a CI is because they cannot pick up the subtle inflections hearing people do that tend to use the voice tone to minimize "you might die from taking this medication" while maximizing "You might get some small benefit from taking this medication." Fortunately some cultures believe that blaming the victim is appalling. I do believe your comparison of CI salesmen to Hamburger salesmen does have merit though.
