Students are nominated by their schools for the Lincoln awards. Here is a list of those who received Circle of Valor honors from the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis:

• Veneta Smith, Beech Grove High School, has a grade-point average of 3.13 despite a life of constant relocation because of family strife. She also suffered injuries in two automobile accidents.

• Robert Davenport, Broad Ripple High School, ranks eighth in his class of 277 and is a member of the National Honor Society. He was struck by a drunken driver while riding his bicycle his sophomore year. He hopes to become a surgeon.

• Dustin Gudmundson, Perry Meridian High School, hopes to attend Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and become a doctor. He has muscular dystrophy and uses a motorized wheelchair.

• Elizabeth Thompson, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, was diagnosed with cancer her freshman year, has achieved a 3.47 grade average and is determined not to allow her disease to slow her down.

• Heidi Shepherd, Decatur Central High School, hopes to attend IUPUI or Ball State University to study special education. Her mother was diagnosed with cancer last fall, and she manages the household and works 20 to 36 hours a week.

Katie Lechner, Indiana School for the Deaf, hopes to become a graphic artist. In addition to being deaf, she has been told she will continue to lose her vision.

• Kathleen Moreland, North Central High School, has lupus and has contracted histoplasmosis, leaving her near death at one point. She has a 3.36 grade average and has inspired adults to fund wish- granting for children.

• Marin Rados, Warren Central High School, will receive a Core 40 diploma. He was born in Bosnia, where his home burned after war broke out. He lived in an internment camp before his family moved to the United States in 2000.

• Case Calvert, Lutheran High School, has muscular dystrophy and is a member of the National Honor Society. He hopes to attend Herron School of Art and major in visual communications and graphic design.

• Charles Moore, Franklin Central High School, has asthma and dyslexia and has been diagnosed with cancer. He regularly demonstrates compassion for others.

• Timothy Powers, Tech High School, has survived abandonment and parental custody problems and plans to attend Purdue University, where he hopes to study aviation technology.

• Adam Kanzler, Covenant Christian High School, has a 3.91 grade average. He has undergone 10 major ear surgeries and is nearly deaf in his left ear.

• Erin McCalley, Bishop Chatard High School, has a 3.74 grade average and plays volleyball and softball. Her mother, who is single, uses a wheelchair, and McCalley has taken on many household responsibilities.

• Jeffrey Jennings, Thomas Carr Howe Academy, has used a wheelchair since he was injured in a crash during a dirt bike race. He has a 2.5 grade average and has taught everyone not to take things for granted.

• Jasmine Washington, Arlington High School, survived parents who showed no interest in her and has been diagnosed with cancer. She cares for her grandfather, who is diabetic and on kidney dialysis. She handles all the household functions for him.

• John Hester, Manual High School, suffers from a disease that left his back misshapen and has other disorders. He has a 3.8 grade average and hopes to study engineering and computer software.

• Shalicia Holman, Heritage Christian High School, is a published poet and has a 3.25 grade average. She came from a dysfunctional family and has attempted suicide. She hopes to study psychology.

• Katherine Turner, Southport High School, survived a brain tumor.

• Keith Jackson, Cardinal Ritter High School, has experienced respiratory problems but was awarded the "Top Hog" award from coaches at the school, where he has been involved with wrestling, golf and football.

• Richard Smith, Pike High School, hopes to study criminal justice at Howard University and become an FBI agent. He is deaf in one ear and has a birth defect in his right hand. He has missed only one day of school since kindergarten.


• Ashely Hanson, Park Tudor School, has a 3.55 grade average and has diabetes. She hopes to attend Emory University to study biology.

• Sarah Jerrell, Lawrence Central High School, has a 3.4 grade average although she has had to deal with an illness that has left her in constant pain.
She wants to be a nurse and has been admitted to Purdue University.

• Sarah Herrera, Speedway High School, was diagnosed with brain cancer at a young age and suffered complications from treatment for the disease. Even so, she has a 3.64 grade average and has been admitted to the School of Engineering at IUPUI, where she intends to major in biomedical engineering.

• Jenna Oyler, George Washington High School, was selected for the National Honor Society and is the opinion page editor for her school newspaper. She overcame major obstacles in her home life.

• Drew Ruckelshaus, Cathedral High School, was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma at birth and has undergone nine surgeries. He also was diagnosed with leukemia. He has a 3.88 grade average and hopes to become a certified athletic trainer.
