So with covid I don’t want to always stand near my coworkers using my transcrib apps on my phone to talk to them since many don’t wear masks near me (to read lips) and when they do wear masks they don’t wear them correctly. Other than handing them a paper is there anything I can give them so they can type it out to me without using my own phone or getting to close to them?

You might be able to hand em a portable keyboard tied to your phone wirelessly or bluetooth.

I know very little about this myself because its a emerging way of working with smart phones. Im looking into it myself as a possible fast way to enter information into smarphone based relay calls within it's screen without having to pull up it's own dailpad to type in letters slowly.

That’s a good idea might be hard for me to wal around with it since they will not be able to see the screen in what they write type to me. It is a start thanks foe the suggestion

I am retired but use a cell phone that has the Android operating system. One of my apps on it is Googles Live Transcribe. I use that with a corded mic that I hold close enough to people for the app to pickup what they are saying and thus me read what they are saying on my phone screen. If you want to be more than an arms length away from them clip the mic to something such as the folding yard stick that I have used at times. With this they could use their mask as you are not trying to read lips.

I just looked into an add one mic foe my phone while using the standard apps I have an iPhone and the live transcribe is the go to app. I wish I didn’t have to pay for it. Tyvm for the suggestion of clipping a mic. Most people at work when I ask them to stay back don’t understand me just holding out my phone.. weird maybe throwing them a 6 foot mic would be better still have to wipe it down but like you suggested I am not in the danger zone of a sneeze thanks again

How married are you to the iPhone and that operating system? You might want to look at phones that use the Android OS the next time you get a phone. The Google Live Transcribe for it is good and FREE. It does make some errors but most can be understood out of context. Of course, picking up speech through a mask doesn't make it any better!

The mic that I use is a very cheep one from Walmart (just under $10 in the US but the particular one I have was on closeout.) Earlier I had one that I got from a seller on Ebay that as I remember was around $13 and included extensions to make a longer cord. Those extensions work with what I bought recently. The cords I am talking about plug into the earphone connector.

In fact, I bought an extra that I leave by my bedroom TV to make my own captions by using the cell phone when I run across a program that is not captioned. I use the one that I carry with me when going out for this on my main TV.

Back when we were having in-person church services having the mic just clipped to the phone case to keep from covering up the mic built in my phone worked well to get what my Pastor was saying that was coming through the main sound system in the church rather then it being held close to him. Since covid and services over Facebook Live I have gone to having that on on my computer (which happens to be a laptop) with the sound up. The mic is placed by the speaker on the computer for Live Transcribe to pickup from there. We are just starting to try having in-person service with a limit on the number of people and I can tell a difference in how accurate it is with Pastor wearing a mask and when it is from his home and him not wearing a mask. It is still good enough to be easy to follow.

I know this post has gotten long but hope it is helpful enough to be worth the length.

I always appreciate knowledge no matter how long the explanation. I just upgraded my phone so going to the android is a no go at this time. I have bought an extra long 6m mic to plug into my phone to hand to people at work and that may be the easiest way to social distance in my work environment. However the people I work with are not patient when it comes to communicating with me. I have to tell them give me a second to turn on my app by the time I do it they turn away and tell the people in the room ‘tell her this I don’t have time to explain it again’ attitude. The people I work with can’t wait before using masks for me to get my phone telling them to hold a mic would be ...who know what. I am going to try what you and others suggest if it comes down to it taping a pen and paper to a wall would be best lol. I just remember before phone there was two text tablets each person could pick up and type to each other. I wish that were still available for work. Thanks again for the tips and see my response was just or more so longer than yours. Tyvm again

I have some catching up to do.

I have a doctors coming up soon this month and probably will try out the ideas to see if the smartphone can do some words off her masked speech. We are now a no mask state but in doctors and businesses etc its still is.
