Hello my name is Jonathan Cardle; I am business student from Edinburgh Scotland. I am carrying out research on the wants and needs of people with hearing impairment, and if these wants and needs are being met. The information that I gather would be used to create a project report that I am currently doing, as part of an industrial placement for an Edinburgh based company. If your are interested in helping, please contact me at Jonathan.Cardle@ihear.co.uk. Your participation in this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time, I hope to hear from some of you soon.

Jonathan:
The bast way to do this would be to go out into the deaf community and see in person the information you are looking for. :)

I suggest that you should collect reliable information from deaf association that has social workers who deal with deaf community. I hope it is helpful.

I think that there's a fairly well established deaf community in Guernsey, although that's quite a distance away from you. I've been told, but I don't know first hand, than in Europe and Britain, oralism has been much more widespread than in the USA. If that's the case, you may find that it's harder to find signing communities in the UK -- the goal of oralism has always been the mainstreaming of deaf people into hearing communities. (It's a point of debate with many Deaf folks about whether that is actually ever accomplished.)

I grew up oral with all hearing people and now I use ASL 95% of the time and all of my friends are signers whether they are deaf or hearing. I do not feel comfortable hanging out with hearing people who do not use sign unless it is in an one on one situation only. So, oral education with the purpose of immersing me into the hearing world didnt work for me.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond to my post. I will cartainly taking your advice and speaking to deaf organisations around the UK. I find it very interesting that you also mention Oralism vs. Manualism; as from doing my research it seems it is the most controversial topic (correct me if Im wrong) within this community. Can I ask what all of your personnal thoughts are on this? Advantages/Disadvantages?
