The Official Website for RIT Athletics - Worsley Named U.S.A. National Deaf Men's Coach
RIT volleyball Head Coach Roger Worsley was named the USA National Deaf Men’s coach. Worsley will coach the men for three years, starting in 2007. The national team will compete at the 2007 Pan-Am Games in Valencia, Venezuala, 2008 World Volleyball Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina and 2009 Deaflympics in Tapei, Taiwan.
Worsley, who is entering his seventh year at the helm of the RIT volleyball program, is excited about the chance to coach for his country.
“I am very honored to have this great opportunity, not only for myself, but for RIT,” said Worsley. “I am excited to get the opportunity to elevate the deaf program and it get it widely recognized and foster a sense of national pride. I would like to foster greater growth for more kids, both deaf and hearing to want to try volleyball in the future.”
Worsley needs just 10 more wins to become the all-the leader in RIT volleyball coaching wins. Last season, Worsley led the Tigers to 24 wins and an Empire 8 regular season title, while fielding a team that lost five starting seniors from the season before. In 2005, Worsley led the Tigers to a 32-8 record and their best winning percentage since the 1993 season.
Worsley is second in all-time wins at RIT, as the Tigers have compiled an impressive 161-77 record (.676 winning percentage) since the 2001 campaign, his first year at RIT. In 2003, Worsley was named the Empire 8 Coach of the Year. He led the Tigers to back-to-back ECAC titles in 2003 and 2004.
Tryouts will be held this summer at yet to be determined locations. The 2007 Pan-Am Games will be held from Aug.11-18. The 2008 World Volleyball Championships will run from Aug. 1-15 and the 2009 Deaflympics begin on Sep. 1 and conclude Sep. 15.
