Two local women will be crossing the globe to represent the 4-States at an international conference for Christian, deaf workers.
Mary Alice Gardner, an instructor of deaf communications at Ozark Christian College, says she'll be working a lot at the event the first week in October.
She says sign language is not universal , so she will assist participants with communicating.
Carole Roper, a retired postal worker, is deaf herself and will also be a delegate.
Roper says technology like videophones have made a big difference and Gardner says the conference will let them share that with the world.
"This one is specifically is geared toward informing deaf people from other countries giving them the opportunity to report about what is happening in their churches and what is happening with the deaf community in their country, and often times statistics and surveys don't recognize deaf people," Gardner says.
A fundraiser to help the delegates' trip to Egypt will be held Monday, September 15 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at both Joplin Pizza Inn locations.
A portion of sales and tips will help defray travel costs.
On the second Saturday of each month a deaf chat is held at the Northpark Mall food court. Also, on September 25, a deaf magician will perform in Springfield at the Parkview High School auditorium.
