JPD Investigates City's 3rd Slaying Of 2009 - News- msnbc.com

A woman known in her neighborhood as "the candy lady" had been dead for a while before her body was found on Thursday, the Hinds County Coroner said.

Police said a friend found the body of Patricia Hemphill, 46, at about 9 a.m. Thursday inside a home at 808 Detroit St. Hemphill had been shot in the head, police said. Her body was sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab to be autopsied, the Hinds County coroner said.

Police believe someone broke in through a window and killed Hemphill in her sleep, Scott said.

Hemphill's brother, the Rev. G.A. Hemphill, said that she had worked for years at the Mississippi School for the Deaf, but because of health reasons, she was no longer able to work.

"Unfortunately, these things are happening and it's sad. It's happening in and out of the city of Jackson," Hemphill said. "As we try to improve the city, we see that you're not just hearing about it on the news about other people -- you're beginning to hear it about your own people."

Hemphill had a son, daughter and three grandchildren, Hemphill said.
