Woman delivers baby outside ward-Lucknow-Cities-The Times of India

A 22-year-old deaf and dumb woman was forced to deliver a baby outside Gandhi Ward of the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) on Monday. While the woman and her newborn lay on the roadside with a curtain formed around her by other women present on the spot, medical help came nearly 40 minutes after the delivery.

Sushma Devi had come to the CSMMU on Monday morning from Momnabad, a small village in Sitapur, along with her husband Amar Singh, father-in-law Kunjbihari, two brothers-in-law Kailash and Omkar and sister-in-law Lanka Devi. Ironically, barring Kunjbihari, all other family members were deaf and dumb. They had come to seek medical help for their speech and hearing problem at CSMMU’s ENT department.

Sushma was eight-month pregnant. After taking medical advice from the ENT department, the family was on its way back when Kunjbihari asked the female members to sit outside Gandhi Ward as he along with the male members went to buy medicines and some food. While the males were away, Sushma started having labour pain. The hapless woman could not even call for help because of her impairment.

A small farmer, Kunjbihari, later, told reporters that Sushma communicated the problem to her sister-in-law through signs, but the two women could not call for medical help. "On coming back, I saw Sushma lying on the pavement with the newborn. The umbilical cord was still unattached. We asked for help but nobody came. However, some women reacted promptly and formed a curtain around Sushma," he said.
