'Willy-nilly bed-hopping' at school for deaf pupils - mirror.co.uk

UNDERAGE sex between boarders as young as 12 was commonplace at a top grammar school for the deaf, a judge revealed yesterday.

The £35,000-a-year school allowed a “promiscuous culture” and let down its pupils, Judge Richard Parkes QC said.

One parent, who asked not to be named, said bed-hopping was rife. She claimed: “A culture exists of pupils hopping in and out of bed with each other, willy nilly. There is freedom of movement at all hours of the day and night, unsupervised.

“This has been going on for a very long time. I have spoken to pupils from 20 years ago who say it was the same back then.”

Former pupil Aeron Mazija, 20, was yesterday jailed for three years for having sex with 12 and 13-year-old girls at the Mary Hare Grammar School for the Deaf when he was 18. Judge Parkes told him, via a signer: “All of the victims and yourself were at a school where consensual sexual *relationships between underage pupils was commonplace. Sexual relationships were the norm.

“You had no appreciation or awareness of the implications of having underage sex. Relationships between pupils of different ages was not discouraged at the school and there were many examples of underage sex. It is fair to say that pupils were rather promiscuous. Underage sex was not that seriously treated at the school.” The judge was told yesterday that Mazija had once been caught having sex with a 16-year-old girl on the stage in the school hall when he was just 14.

Teachers found them but no action was taken, Reading crown court was told.

Mazija, of Woking, Surrey, admitted having sex with a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl in 2008 and 2009.

The school in Newbury, Berks, educates 230 pupils aged from five to 19. Its principal Tony Shaw yesterday denied underage sexual relationships were rife.

He said: “All the pupils who are 16 or below live in single-sex accommodation which is separate and distant from each other. The main thing that was said by the judge was that relationships were commonplace and we were naive if we thought they weren’t sexual.

“We reject that. We don’t think we have a greater or lower number of relationships than any other place.”

This is my old school. Parents of pupils/ex pupils, current pupils and ex pupils are supporting the school, they gave us amazing education. Such a scandal.

One of ex pupil's letter to the John Garvey for the article on the school -

Goodmorning Mr John Garvey As a very-proud-of-the-school-in -my-younger-days ex pupil of Mary Hare Grammar School and now long-in-the-tooth;your reporting as shown on the Old Hares website made me look twice at the date of my morning newspaper to see if this was April Fool's Day! Then I thought, maybe I have tumbled down the rabbit hole to Alice in Wonderland's adventure! Alas, no to neither!
Mary Hare school was always well chaperoned by the diligent Prefects and the Staff teachers on Duty.Sometimes in life facts can be obscured (I am not saying they are here) and a little leeway extends toa trifle more 'embroidery' per se. Additionally the mores of ALL younger generation peoples in the Western World have been coloured by the media bombardment intentionally and un-intentionally of susceptible children. Modern forms ofcommunication have hastened their childhoods too fast and furiously; before their minds are grown up enough to match their sexually conscious young bodies.
Deaf people like hearing people are not immune to the bombardment of their senses and persons. To say that I am flabbergasted is an understatement: why was the Head and the Staff not allowed to show or inform of mitigating circumstances? There can be no intention on the part of the school to permit this way of life to flourish unchecked -even in this so called day and age of enlightment. Have you actually been to Mary Hare School to discuss the reporting and to see for yourself the Staff and Prefects? What are the parents of present pupils to think now?
The school has an excellence unrivalled academically and Nationally for the Deaf Children in Great Britain, and some from overseas.Their successes in examinations are indeed above many a school of hearing children. All children need to be 'chaperoned' by those in authority above them: it must be harder than ever now outside of school hours especially for the boarders. I am so overwhelmed by this whole reporting and I do not blame a Judge for doing his duty for justice must be seen to be done for the vulnerable of society. Yet I still cannot find it in myself to believe that the school would permit with a blind eye. No, no, no! Yes the 18 year old should have known better, but why blame the whole school ethos or appear to blame it.
I and others of my ilk are enormously proud of the school which gave us vast opportunities in life to go onwards and upwards to better ourselves and other deaf people's lives. In the hearing world we have and are able to be role models for the deaf academics who came/come after us.
There are successful reunions of Old Hares as we call ourselves which have now been in place officially and unofficially since the Grammar School was set up after the death of Mary Hare (in Sussex) and moved to Arlington Manor in 1949.For us it was a wonderful life. Indeed my previously privately printed Limited Edition autobiography will be re-printed and put into the public domain in paper back asap..it covers my years at Mary Hare School. And is entitled EMILY'S SEVENTH DAUGHTER I shall remain Proud of The Mary Hare Grammar School in spite of any rotten apples in the barrel. I do not speak for the Head and his Staff and Prefects just for myself and I feel confident that where and if licentiousness is found, they will clean out the Augean stables. Thoroughly. There is no other Grammar School of Excellence as The Mary Hare School and it is still the ONLY one of it's kind in Britain and possibly in the western world. Yours sincerely Mrs Violet Foot A Churchill Fellow 1972
