Hi,

I'm HOH and looking into starting my own business in the computer field. I've been looking into a few mobile phones and can't figure out which one will help me the most.
Different salesmen tell me different things and the Internet is vague about these models too.

So far my options are:

Sidekick II
Blackberry 7xxx
Nextel

Along with Internet Access I'm looking primarily for voice-to-text AND text-to-voice capabilities since I have trouble hearing over a regular phone. I would like to send messages to phones like Wyndtell RIM 950 did, but also be able to have clients call me and I can read a message they leave via voicemail if possible.

I had a Wyndtell that did all this, but it broke down and their customer service is horrible now.

Anyone happen to have one of these phones or another that is proven to do what I'm looking for?

Thanks for ANY help!

Marlies

I am veteran with Blackberry and SK2 It is HARD to determine whats best fits your needs. Only you know for sure. But in this case, I would recommend SK2. They got somewhat better package for deafies and HOH over SK2 Nextel is pricey! Tmobile is cheapest. If you want BB, your limited to first 300 free text message (Different than Instant messages). After that you shell out 5 cents per message you send and recieve. On other hand SK2 offers UNLIMITED text messaging!!! So, if your into business you might want to have unlimited text message cause you can send text message to almost any cell phone. Voicemail part, both BB and SK2 offers equal access. What BB offer the best is awesome E-mail system. Very powerful!!! Comparing to SK2. BB offers twice of battery life between charging. SK2 I have to recharge almost every day, verses BB every 4 days. BB don't fare well with Instant message comparing to SK2 that have wonderful instant messaging. Coverage, almost same. So, I weight overall value, SK2 has best overall value IMHO. My opinion might not be compatible with you.

Thanks for the info!

Thank you, I was looking for that information myself for my son. He is only 10 now but when he goes with his hearing friends to play he doesnt have any way of calling home. So for now his hearing friend calls me for him to ask if he can play longer :) ( he is fortunate to finally have 2 very kind and loyal hearing friends where we live).

Did you say that the SK2 does do voice to text? I would like that feature for him also.

I am signed up with Verizon right now.. I think they have those blackberries.

I have also heard something about a pager for deaf people...

If anyone has an idea about what communication technology may work good for him Id love to hear your ideas. He can type and read just fine.

Thanks!
Tara

I use a cellphone for SMS and MMS. Not sure if that helps, but it's popular in Norway.. since we dont have those text pagers available. The model I am happy with right now is Ericsson T637. Take photos like those SKs, and can be used in any country no matter where I travel to. I was able to use my cellphone in Russia a month ago. It could be useful in case your kid needed to call police or emergencies like that.

If you want it for business, learn as much as you can on what a Blackberry can do for you. Mark's Big BlackBerry FAQ/Tips/Tricks/HOWTOs by Mark Rejhon, a deaf Canadian.

After hanging up our Wyntell 850's (we feel your pain!), my wife and I each have a personal-use Blackberry 7290 through Cingular-Blue (AT&T). I am HoH and she is Deaf. I use the cellphone and unlimited data plan while hers is the unlimited data plan only, which includes all e-mail and browser use. We do get charged $0.0048 per Kb using third-party apps that access the internet. However, that's only a few dollars extra a month. There's other carriers and plans as well.

In the computer field, I could see someone using a telnet program, which you can read about in the link above as well as many other items of interest! I understand Relay via telnet is very good on the BB. Read on!

Good luck!

Be aware! If you want use SMS alot, it is going to cost you more. And for third party that offers better AIM, telnet. It is NOT free! there is one time and yearly subscription feesinvolved. SK, have everything included without need of third party! As for browser, I noticed that SK handles internet better than Blackberry, sorry to be blunt. Overall, Blackberry DOES cost more in long run, that is why I quit blackberry and gone for SK2. SK2 have telnet with one time 9.95 dollars download. No additional subscription is needed. Two softwares that communicates with relay can be download to SK2 for free. No extra subscription is needed for Sk2, on other hand BB, sorry you have to shell about 40 dollars a year.

Congratulation on quitting WyndSHITell!!! I already warn CEO to pay attention to customer satisfaction. I even mentioned that in real business world, it is three time easier to keep old customer than to find new customers. He don't believe this, and guess what he told me? He wants to go though three phases to transform his company. I told him So fuck what? I don't care about how he wants to shape his company. All I wanted him to do is R E S P E C T my contract agreement with WyndSHITell. He refused, then end of business relationship with him. And now that I watch how his company slide down at much faster rate (From 28,000 subscriber to about 1,200 subscriber). I am laughing at WyndShitell.
