What is Careless/Negligence

I have several question but not sure what determine word term to apply about Careless/Negligence.

Can anyone explain that example, because I look up define mean and all not bit clear... can anyone explain if can?

both means the same thing but usually used for different context. Negligence is usually for legal terms. However.. one can say "careless" is soft word while negligence is a stronger emphasis.

"You are very careless!"
"This is a serious negligence on your part"

It is like a degree - Careless then Neglience then Abuse

Depends on how serious it is.


He left a cigarette burning on his sofa so he was careless. (he didnt think enough)

He placed a cigarette on someone's pants so he was neglient. (he knew better but was lazy or didnt care)

He shoved a cigarette into someone's skin and burned him so he was abusing him. (he did it on purpose)
