hello eyeryone at alldeaf.com. well i am an ASL student and i just had a question that i though i could post here and get some good feedback on. i was wondering if the deaf community thought that the federal and state goverment have done enough to help out the deaf community. if you think yes, what do you think one of the greatest things the goverment has done to help. if you think no, what do you think is one of the biggest things the goverment could do to improve the deaf communities lives.

or if you just want to post something that you think might help out that would be just great.

thanks for your time.

Hello Dylan,

btw, Welcome to AD! glad to have you here ;)

I honestly feel that the government and the state doesn't do much to help the deaf commimunities by providing warning signals that could save the lives of many disablity ( deaf, hoh, blind, wheelchair etc. ) people...

Such as:

--If we're in the store, not knowing if a robbery is happening

--If we're at our own work place and not knowing there's a bomb or someone shooting others by not being able to hear the gun shot going off, and etc....

--If we're in a store or at our job, not knowing if there's a fire or and how to help a blind and wheelchair to get out of a building when a fire is going on....

-- if a storm was coming near such as tornados, hurricanes and etc..( when there's no electric to be able to watch the news to read the closed caption to know what's going on ) or while we are driving on the road and not being able to hear the radio in the car....

--if we were stuck in the elevator alone and not being able to use the phone in there to be able to call in for help when we're stuck in there, or not knowing if someone is on their way there to help us....

There's so many more but I can't think of any more right at this moment, maybe others will be able to fill in the rest....

I hope this helps ;)

I live in Oregon and I believe that the govt here is in Dark Ages when it comes to providing resources for the deaf. Washington has over 5 regional centers and California has numerous centers, yet Oregon has none.

Almost every week one or two deaf come to my work looking for legal advice, advocacy or jobs. We lack job training centers, advocacy and legal/medical advice.

I am really disillusioned. So many deaf leaders leave this state because quality of life for a Deaf person is almost nonexistent. I dream of living in a state where their govt is supportive to deaf needs and have rich social life but I cannot leave Oregon...it is my home.
