Fr. Joe Kenga, of Mivumoni parish in Kwale district, started a walk at 5.00 am on May, 1, 2007, from Lunga Lunga, the town on the Kenya / Tanzania border.

The purpose of the walk was to raise awareness of the plight of Deaf children in Kenya, and to raise funds to build a secondary and vocational school for the deaf in Shimba Hills, Kwale.

This is not the first walk Fr. Joe has undertaken.

In 1985 he walked from Taita to Kilifi, again in favour of the deaf.

The deaf are close to his heart as both his sister and brother are deaf.

Another significant reason for the walk is that Fr. Joe celebrates 25 years as a priest in October, 2007.

For him to celebrate was to walk from Lunga Lunga to the Star of the Sea School in Mombasa as one phase.

Later in October he will walk from Mombasa to Malindi for the same purpose.

Fr. Joseph is no "dreamer".

In 10 years in the Shimba Hills, he has at least two significant projects in favour of the needy.

The epilepsy centre (Kifafa Clinic) supports about 150 patients who receive medical care, thus helping them to live almost normal lives.

Another achievement is the high breed goat project for milk, which assists families affected or infected with HIV/AIDS.

The present walk is for the construction of St. Joseph School for the Deaf, which may be the fourth secondary School for the deaf in the whole country.
