Walker Foundation receives an $8,000 grant | GoUpstate.com

The Walker Foundation, the fundraising arm of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind (SCSDB), has received an $8,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. Funds will be used to support SCSDB’s dynamic academic programs, including the new Cochlear Implant Program, and statewide enrollment efforts.

The new Cochlear Implant Program offers students the best of both auditory and visual communication methods through a unique, language-rich environment designed to provide equal access to both sign language and spoken English throughout the day. Other programs offered by SCSDB include the School for the Deaf, School for the Blind, School for the Multihandicapped, and a series of statewide outreach programs.

“We are truly honored to receive such a generous donation from Bank of American Charitable Foundation,” said Ann Akerman, CEO of The Walker Foundation. “Their continued support speaks volumes about their philanthropic spirit, and their desire to support children with a sensory disability.”

Scott Mitchell, Spartanburg market president for Bank of America, presented the $8,000 gift to Akerman and Maggie Park, president of SCSDB.

“We are pleased to support the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind and The Walker Foundation,” said Mitchell. “Providing educational opportunities to meet the evolving needs of students with sensory disabilities is essential to help them lead fulfilling lives of productivity and independence.”

“We are so appreciative of the Bank of America Charitable Foundation’s generous support over the years,” said Park. “They have made a lasting impact on our students and programs. This grant will allow us to share our story and the many wonderful programs we offer with students and families across the state.”
