A ONE-YEAR research project has been set up to explore the problems and barriers which deaf people within Wales face when accessing health care services.

Dr Fei Zhao, lecturer in audiology at the School of Health Science, University of Wales, Swansea will lead the research, which is funded by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.

The research will be carried out in 12 general hospitals across Wales and aims to identify new ways of working to improve services for deaf and hard of hearing people.

Dr Zhao said, "There are nine million deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the UK - one-in-seven of the population.

"But because they are hard of hearing, they may experience communication difficulties, for example when making an appointment over the telephone to a hospital.

"This project will review the quality and access to healthcare services that is currently delivered by the health service to the deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Wales."
