Viable Unveils First WiFi-enabled, Portable Videophone Designed for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons who Use Video Relay Services

Viable Inc., a provider of video relay services (VRS) for deaf and hard of hearing, unveiled the VPAD, its wireless, portable videophone, at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The VPAD is the first wireless videophone developed specifically for VRS users.

"The VPAD signals a higher technology standard. Beginning today, VRS users will expect more from their videophones," said Viable CEO and founder John T.C. Yeh.

The VPAD features a 10.2-inch touch screen and does not require a remote control. It also comes with a USB port, audio/video input and output ports, standardized mounting, and a visual and audio alerts system. In idle mode, the VPAD can function as a digital picture frame. Product specifications and photos are available at Viable.net - VPAD and media practitioners may request a press kit.

Viable exhibited the VPAD at CES Unveiled, an exclusive media event attended by the international press community prior to the CES. More than 2,200 reporters from approximately 800 media outlets were on hand. Viable will also exhibit throughout the CES, which is open to the public from January 7-10. All deaf and hard of hearing attendees are welcome to test the VPAD and interact with Viable representatives at booth space #36904.

"The CES is internationally synonymous with product launches: The VCR debuted there in the 1970s; the camcorder in the 1980s; and the CD, DVD and HDTV in the 1990s. We wanted our videophone to be part of that tradition of innovation," said Anthony Mowl, who will manage the nationwide VPAD rollout. The videophone will undergo testing with a limited pool of beta testers before full-scale distribution.

More than 250,000 are expected to attend the CES throughout the week. Those interested in attending the tradeshow should visit http://www.cesweb.org for more information.

CES 2008: Viable's video phone for deaf and hard of hearin

Tech Digest: CES 2008: Viable's video phone for deaf and hard of hearing

One of the more interesting products on show at CES Unveiled this afternoon was Viable's video phone aimed at the deaf and hard of hearing amongst us.

The newly-established company's put a lot of time and money into developing the phone, which is completely portable and wireless. With a 10.2" touch screen, the unit has a USB port, audio and video inputs and outputs and the usual visual and audio alerts you'd expect for high quality two-way video conferences. At 30fps, it's not too shabby.

What's fascinating is the phone was developed by deaf people, for deaf people. Even the man on the stand telling me about it was deaf himself, and using sign language, communicated via a translator.
