The Beaver County Rehabilitation Center is a United Way agency in New Brighton that provides services for people with disabilities.
The center offers vocational training, job placement, on-the-job training, vocational assessment and school-to-work transition services to more than 300 people with disabilities. It is also one of the few county agencies that serve deaf people.
Frank McGeorge, who is deaf, works at the center and hopes to get a job in the community someday. He enjoys his work, and he enjoys the fact that there are people at the center who listen and talk to him in his own language.
He has blossomed because the work culture at the rehabilitation center is one of understanding and acceptance. He participates enthusiastically in such industrial jobs as drilling, inspecting and small-parts assembly.
Sign language takes a great deal of skill to master. Certified sign language interpreters spend many years developing the speed and command of the language that enable them to talk as fast with their hands as most people do with their mouths.
Every fall and spring, the center offers an introductory sign language class to the general public. A nominal fee is charged.
Officials of the rehabilitation center hope that acceptance of people who are deaf will extend beyond the walls of the agency to the community at large.
The center also offers an interpreting service that assists people who are deaf to communicate while they are at the doctor, court appearances and other important meetings.
The rehabilitation center is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. It has taken the lead in providing quality employment and communication services to people who are in need.
For more information, call (724) 847-1306 or visit the main office at 1517 Sixth Ave., New Brighton.
