SEATTLE -- Twenty years ago, Marilyn Smith began an organization called Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services (ADWAS), an organization that counsels deaf women in crisis.
ADWAS offers transitional housing for deaf and deaf-blind women escaping from abusive relationships or recovering from sexual assault.
ADWAS has been a model for 14 other programs across the country and Smith has been nationally recognized for her work.
