THE WHO rocker PETE TOWNSHEND is losing his hearing, and fears the disability will spell the end of his songwriting career.

The MY GENERATION hitmaker, 60, blames his own brand of loud rock music for his increasing deafness, and is terrified the damage is irreversible.

But the guitarist is determined to create as much new music as possible, while he still can.

Townsend says, "I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal proponents deaf.

"This is a tour that rather depends on me writing new songs. The process has taken a long time. I've spoken about the problem of cracking the right material, but there is something else.

"I have terrible hearing trouble. Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it can not be repaired."

This is terrible news. Pete Townshend is one of the largest influences ever on rock today, and an amazing guitarist. The lost of John Entwistle was, in itself, sad enough. I hope the best for Pete.

Well, I doubt he'll have as profound of an impact as Beethoven, but he's definetely earned his place in music history. Have you ever seen a guitarist swing his arm in a full circle, strumming the guitar on the way up? He was the first person to do that.

If I recall, he's been having some kind of ear trouble for quite awhile. I can imagine how disturbing this is for him...at times when my tinnitus would flare up, before some kind souls on here explained what normal, everyday things could cause that, I'd get nervous. (No offense meant to anybody, of course...it's just that if you're born with something, you tend to get quite attached, especially if it becomes key to making your living.)
